Is this grow normal? Pins into the substrate (First harvest!!!!)

I'm wondering if this is normal. Actually this is my first grow, so I don't have much experience Pins are forming into the substrate, one is even upside down I'm scared they're growing too deep into the substrate, so they won't came out... is this possible or this is normal?

i suggest taking some black tape and wrapping up to where the top of the substrate is so that light isnt hitting down there. doing that will make those pins grow straight up and through the top. and youll end up with great big long guys at the sides in your second flush or something.

using a light barrier does help . but theres more to it then that
whats causing the pins is a combo of light from the sides and fresh air coming in threw the gab of the substrate and tray thing,
whats the best to do is use a plastic lining like a garbage bag or something this will stop light and the mycelium will cling to it as it shrinks back and pull it with it

I have read before that this will happen no matter what, It is not simply just the light that causes the pinning it is also the FAE that in most casings happens to get to the sides as well so it is inevitable.
As for your sub it doesn't look like its fully colonized even (might just be the camera) but if it is you can gently take it out of the container and sit the cake inside of a FC. (You can just use the container it was in upside down and use the bottom to support the block off the perlite)
The pins should continue to grow just fine. If the sub is not fully colonized and you do this it will likely mold.

the substrate is fully colonized, but straight vermiculite that I used for casing is not
I'll just try stopping the light
Thanks!

light is not the biggest pinning trigger, fresh air is, and once pinning starts you cant stop it
just take it out of the tray and treat it like a cake

I just reversed the container and treated like a cake; after 19 days the mushrooms are growing very slowly and very malformated. I think I can imagine the causes (the temperature was too low, and RH too high, maybe also too CO2); the question is: will they be safe to eat?

The first time I grew mushrooms I used brf cakes and all of my mushrooms looked like that. I couldn't figure out why.
I moved on to using monotubs and never had that problem again.

Those dark striations are caused from being waterlogged.
Those are some of the nastiest buggers I've seen. I usually eat any fruitbody, but those are borderline gross.

I'm going to dry them, then make dust and caps, so beautiful or ugly doesn't matter! The important thing is there's no danger (some contamination and so on) Thanks everybody

Finally, the first harvest!:

now temperatures are higher, so many shrooms developed correctly, like these:

but someone is really horrible, so I threw them in the garbage: jpg[/image]

and finally, I got this little freak

total weight was about 140g. I'm quite satisfied since this is my first grow, now I'm waiting for the (eventual) second flush
