I'm not sure if there is actually a straw bucket "tek" per say. I initially was talking to a friend who was growing out of PVC pipe with holes in it who thought buckets would be better, then I saw LokelYokel doing it out of buckets. After that I tried my hand at it and it worked great. The holes on my buckets are 1" and spaced aprox. 3" away from each other in vertically and 4" horizontally. They could probably use wider spacing, as I've noticed that clusters has a tenancy to impede on each others space. As for chopping and filling, I didn't chop my straw at all and I filled them as far as they would go. Honestly, don't need to be too exact to get good results.

It appears the buckets were lined with black plastic and that plastic cut once colonization was considered finished. Did you have any means of verifying the colonization as complete or did you just schedule fruiting for 2 weeks after spawning?

Actually, I cut the holes right after spawning so the mycelium could breath. I check colonization by looking into each of the holes and seeing if I see it poking out. I cut the holes in an "X" so the flaps of the plastic still cover the straw underneath a bit. I don't know how much that does but I like to imagine it will help hold in a bit of moisture and prevent contam spores from coming and landing directly on the straw before full colonization.
