Has anyone used straight straw and had good yeilds
    #1412058 - 03/26/03 03:37 PM (21 years, 8 days ago)

compared to say a straight verm casing, the straight straw tek says that you can put the straw in one of those um bag things put it in a pot of boiling water for whatever time then let cool and ring out water then add substrate, would it be as easy as that if i were to use dung as well. i can't really have a pillow case of dung and straw dripping anywhere, so would i be able to use dung as easy as the straw?

So whats the question?

Are you asking about preperation of dung? or results? Your topic title has nothing to do with what you are saying.. what why are you mentioning verm casing in this?

sorry bout that... words don't come out right for me. what i want to know mainly is if straight straw is worth it if i spawned pf cakes with it. does it produce better yeilds then say a straight verm casing would
also does it produce bigger or more potent fruits?

straw is a "bulk substrate" material, hence spawning. You will still need to case it.

Obviously, spawned straw will do better than just pf cakes. I recommend verm/coir mixture for casing.

Damn! that's 75 dry grams = 4.7 pounds.

Did you spawn an entire bale of straw with one pint?

well now you have confused me, i thought the brf cakes were the spawn and i mix that up with the pastuerized straw

so if thats not it then do i place the mixure of the now colonized straw as the spawn to go into the verm/coir casing

fucking damn, so basically would the colonized straw act asthe same as the brf cakes alone would going into the verm/ coir casing?

This is correct. You mix the crumbled BRF cakes into the pasteurized straw and let if colonize. When colonization is complete, then you case.

nope, just half of one of those loaf-sized mini bales of straw for rabbit hutches etc.
but it was a bit of a freak flush, average for me for that amount of straw is 300-400g wet per first flush, the following flushes being pretty pitiful

It seems that dung will give you lots and lots of fruits that are decent size. Straw will give you less fruits but they are huge. Shrooms from straw were as thick as a quarter, 8 inches tal,l and caps the size of mini donuts.

Straw is easy to do.
Just take some spawn, mix it up good with pasteurized (and hung over night) straw.
It's very important that the spawn is ground up, each tiny bit of mycellium acts as an inoculation point, so the more the merrier.
Plus, the faster the mycellium can colonize the straw, the more chances you have against contamination taking over the straw first.
Don't use rotting straw, or discolorized straw. The best type of straw to use is wheatstraw. Try to minimize the use of alfalfa (green), actually it's best if you don't have any alfalfa at all. Don't use hay.

I think RoadKill has posted some grow logs that have hadd great success with straw. Look for his posts. He also has dung, straw, and straw/dung mixtures as well.

Good luck,
daba

"Has anyone used straight straw and had good yeilds"

This is the title of the thread & the question.  I was "joking" about "straight" straw.
Thanx for trying to be helpfull, though.

Just fyi, my raccoon buys wheat straw by the semi/truck load. He uses it (amoungst other things) to make fresh mushroom compost in 20 tons batches, as in the pic below.
