(edit)(edit) Bucket SGFC... Can I put trays in here?
    #14130049 - 03/16/11 10:51 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

EDIT: Read my long post a few posts down, because I changed my method from the one in this post.

I had a brf jar that stalled out for some reason, and could not revive it. It doesn't seem to be due to contamination from what all my senses can tell. I have other healthy jars so I figured I'd give this a shot.

I filled up your standard home depot bucket with about 4" or 5" of wet perlite. Then I put a piece of parchment paper down, then put the open, half colonized jar on the paper. Then I put the bucket next to a window for natural light cycle. I'm leaving the bucket open, figuring that there should be decent humidity from the perlite, and decent fae from the bucket being open.

That's it. I know one of the flaws include the substrate not being fully colonized. I considered birthing the cake and cutting off the uncolonized part, but I was curious to see if I could get it to fruit like this, and to see if contamination is an issue or if the colonized substrate would act as a barrier to the uncolonized substrate beneath.

I'll probably throw in a hygrometer in a bit to see if humidity is an issue, but it would be nice if it is high enough since that means I don't have to cover the bucket which would hinder FAE, and then I'd have to drill some holes or something and the whole point of this is to see if the mycelium can fruit in these possibly abysmal conditions.

I guess I just enjoy trying different things out of curiosity. Fruits are not my end goal, variety of technique and experience is

(edit) Open bucket FC [Re: freemind]
    #14130498 - 03/16/11 12:31 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Well..... I was thinking and realized there is no point in contaminating a perfectly good bucket and room if it were to contaminate, which is likely. So I just birthed the jar and cut off the uncolonized substrate. And then I was just like, damn, might as well just roll the cake in vermiculite and put it on foil. So now it's actually a more or less legitimate grow with less... experimental overtones. :smirk:

I'm going to see how this cake fruits with an open bucket. Has anyone ever tried fruiting cakes like this before? If I get decent fruits, I'll see if I can turn this in to a full blown tek, something like this:

1. Fill bucket with perlite, put by window
2. Put cake on foil
3. Mist as needed
4. Harvest!

I hope it is this simple. With an open bucket, I believe I've eliminated the need to fan for FAE (maybe I'll fan if I need to remove excess moisture though). This could be even more simple than RR's shotgun fruiting chamber, since the rH is (hopefully) held constant by the perlite, while there is constant FAE through the open roof. It seems so simple that I feel like it's been done before, or is called something else. Or won't work. But I don't see any flaws. rH, FAE, and light all seem to be accounted for. Is there anything I'm missing?

I guess I'll know after this trial if it works or not. It just seems so simple... why close the FC and cause need for more FAE if you can maintain 95% rH with the lid off? I didn't consider though, that the water on the perlite could evaporate off faster with an open lid. But we'll see.

Okay, I suppose I should have waited a few hours to see that rH is certainly not going to hold at 95% with this method. So I just drilled a bunch of holes and now it's a bucket SGFC. I guess there's a reason tried and true methods are so popular, bwahaha.

This is a bit of a reversion since my last grow was a bucket monotub, and now I'm back on SGFC. But I'm wondering if I can spawn to coir in a tray and then just put that tray in my SGFC. Does that work?
