panaeolus cinctulus and panaeolus ___?

found some mushrooms of the panaeolus genus today on a beautiful grassy hill that was scattered with horse poo. the lighter colored ones with the thicker stems were definitely panaeolus cinctulus or pan subbs but the dark ones could be a different species from this genus. the darker mushrooms in question produced a black spore print. any ideas regarding the species of the second group would be much appreciated panaeolus cinctulus

 All together now
 unknown panaeolus

Most, perhaps all of your mushrooms are Panaeolus papilionaceus.

i think you're right that they are mostly papilionaceus but i still think the lighter colored ones are different. here's another photo of them before they got knocked around in my backpack. don't the two on top look pretty different?

I think they are the same but it would be interesting to check the microscopic and genetic features.

I have a few, the one I use most is a Radical phase contrast compound scope. I don't recommend phase contrast, though the darkfield effect that you can do by setting the condenser to the wrong stop is pretty cool.
If you can get a good deal on a used Zeiss or Olympus that would be good. If you want a new one, this looks pretty good. It has kohler illumination and 5 plan objectives:

Also order a reticle when you get a scope so you can measure spores.

i've noticed that panaeolus mushrooms sometimes close up at the bottom kinda like panaeolopsis when they dry. this seems to be particularly true with the smaller ones. here's a pic of the same pans from the original post after sitting around drying for a few days. any thoughts about this phenomenon?

Yes. When the cap (and particularly the edge) dries, it "pinches" the cap back into the shape it was before it expanded. The younger ones do that more because they have a better "memory" of the un-opened cap shape.
