Do I have a San Pedro cactus?
    #14128294 - 03/15/11 11:49 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

Hey everyone.

I just bought this unnamed cactus because I thought it looked like a San Pedro.

Can anyone identify it?

I'm guessing you got this little fella from bunnings?

Trichocereus scopulicola I reckon

Haha not quite, I got it from a small nursery.

Does she need to be transplanted to a bigger pot?

Nah not a scop. Look closely at the spination near the apex. It's a pachanoi.

I know the scops you're talking of. The spines aren't as prominent on those as they are on this one.

This is one of my scopulicola's. Compare this picture to the one that's similar above.

What do you think?

Yeah. Preferably into a large pot, bucket size even. It'll grow some good roots for next Spring and will grow at least 8-12 inches if in a sunny position.

They do look amazingly similar though. How urgent is the bigger pot?

a bigger pot isn't urgent, just preferable, iv seen one grow to over four and a half feet in a 6 inch pot so no need to rush

I'm also on the more scopulicola end of the spectrum--maybe scopulicola/pachanoi hybrid.

Skin texture and rib shape are the most defining characteristics in my mind and they are definitely scopulicola here. Also areoles look slightly recessed which is not a characteristic of straight pachanoi, but I have seen in every scopulicola.

Spines in scopulicola especially in AUS/NZ seems to be highly variable--I've seen labeled specimens with nearly 1 cm spines.

Yeah I still think that its a Hamiltons Scop, Ive had a few that looked like this. Its still very young and those spines will become less and less prominent as each set emerges.

You could be right, time will tell.

At first I would of called it a scopulicola but on looking at it closely I don't think it is, hence the pachanoi tag. A cross is likely as well.

Iding young cactus like this is always a gamble. They haven't grown enough to show their true self. They need to be outside in large pots or in the ground preferably to be able to see their full potential.
