In my area apparently farmers don't even know what rye is. I have gotten so many blank, confused stares. "huh? rye? like the bread?" Yeah Cletus, just like the fucking bread... Screw these backwards assholes. Sadly enough I will most likely have to venture forth from the little farming community I live in and travel to a more metropolitan area to buy the right fucking FEED. How ironic is THAT shit?

Go to a health food store in a big town and they will most likely have a bulk grain/nut/seed aisle with Rye berries.
There are a few in my area and they vary in price from 69 cents per pound to $1.19 per pound, you just get a bag and a twist tie and scoop out enough to fill a few bags and weigh them while you write the item code on the twist tie.
Look up "organic supermarket" on google maps and it will find the place closest to you that will likely sell them by the pound.

Also some home brewing suppliers have Rye Berries. Most cattle graze during the non winter months so it might be hard to find grain at a feed store in the spring/summer.
I would suggest using your map search engine and typing in the nearest big town and other key words like health food/market/organic/whole food grocery store/rye berries, and if you don't find it with organic or health food market, then search for the nearest home brewing supply.(They usually sell grains by the 50 pound bag)

I am trying WBS but I think I like Rye better, its much easier to get the moisture right. I like how the PC dries the Rye Berries out a little so you can soak them with 5-10 cc of LC and shake them and the moisture is still good.

Yeah... sadly, I live in the middle of nowhere, and there are no real health food stores anywhere nearby. Guess MadRiver's right, for the moment I am gonna stick to WBS. Well, and BRF. Did some jars with homemade BRF and it's working quite well. Myc seems to like it. And it was WAY cheaper than buying the prepackaged health food brand that the grocery store sells. Anybody try using any other grains pulverized, like maybe seminola or anything like that? Just curious.

My last batch of jars I kinda mixed things up a bit. Half the jars are store bought BRF, half are BRF I made in my blender from Best Choice brand rice. So far it looks like Best Choice is beating the competition hands down. Lol. Who woulda thought...

Well, I started some new LC's a while back. They are doing GOOD! I used foam earplugs as self-healing ports, and I cut circles of tyvek for GE. Seems to be working quite well. I boiled a quart of water with 1 tablespoon of Karo and a teaspoon of raw sugar. Simmered for ten minutes, then let cool till I wasn't afraid it would shatter the jars. I split the LC into two quart jars, which half filled both. I then covered the lids with aluminum foil and PC'd for about a half hour.
When the jars cooled to room temp I inoculated them with South American spores. And about two days later I started noticing the white buildup of myc. Yay!!!

Well here's pics of my cakes in the SGFC, pinning and all.
There's my actual setup. My home has a HUGE walk-in pantry, which is complete with shelving, so I just converted it into a little play room. Lol
There's my cakes from above. Notice one of the twelve is missing? My first contam loss. Woo hoo... Trich and green mold.
There's a view thru one of the SGFC holes. You can see my hygrometer (which, by the way, works AMAZINGLY well for a two dollar cheapo hygrometer. Found them on clearance at Walmart.)
Here's a cake that's pinning in a huge knot off one side. Hope that isn't sign of CO2 mutation. Keeping an eye on it.
 Better view of the knot.
Here's my first little mushie. Popped up while I was at work two last night.
Will post more pics when have more to photograph. Right now it's just pins. Got a pretty decent pinset though. About 6 out of the 11 cakes have at least 8 pins so far, and some have progressed past what I would consider pins. (Fully distinguishable as mushrooms, cap and all) Have one cake (same one with knot, but on opposite side of cake) that pinned a mushroom at a downward angle. Took that to be a signal that more humidity in air was needed. I am misting about 6 times a days, and humidity level never drops below about 85%.
Anyhow, will post more later.

Your SGFC is a little bit off.

the perlite is supposed to cover the entire bottom 5 inches of your tub.

My mushrooms like the light, I hardly ever fan this tub and mist maybe once every two days. Set it and forget it, I have two fans on in the room and I fan them after I mist, but I think not only does light give them energy, make them pin and point the way "up", but also they can even bend and grow towards light.(Or maybe its the heat of the CFL, or maybe the CFL's heat creates airflow by making the top warmer than the bottom? Your guess is as good as mine.) I just know I am making my monos like this from now on.

Also if your perlite is packed down or has water pooling at the bottom the SGFC won't work as good because the bottom holes won't draw in as much fresh air to hydrate as it passes the perlite.
Those holes don't look 1/4 inch either.

That doesn't look like a SGFC it isn't raised off the ground on all four corners, it has trays with perlite and I don't see any holes in the bottom of the tote. Did you follow RR's tek on mushrooms.com?
The whole idea of the perlite is to have it in the tote with holes under it so that the top will have a negative pressure area and draw the fresh air up through the bottom and humidify it on it's way.

+ I don't think it's a good idea to have that fan blowing directly at your FC...
Also doesn't look like there are holes on all 6 sides.

SGFC should look like this, notice how it is raised up off of the table, so the air can reach the bottom holes, you need holes in every side and moist perlite touching the holes in the bottom, not in a tray-
If you drain the perlite correctly then it will not drip water from the bottom, if you do get it too hydrated and water is pooling around the bottom holes, there is a very easy, not too messy way to drain the excess water through the bottom holes. It's simple just tear paper towels, twist them into wicks, and insert them in a hole near the standing water. Put something under the wicks to catch the water and in an hour or so your SGFC will have the perfect moisture content from the excess water draining slowly down the "wicks".
