Warm weather strains?
    #14118883 - 03/14/11 11:24 AM (12 years, 11 months ago)

I Really need to get my hands on some warm weather edibles. I know shiitake is widely available but does anyone have any ideas for me?

I'd like to find oysters, hericium, and aynthing else of tasty warm nature. I'll be looking for wilds in Florida this year, anyone have cultures or know where i can find some?

My searching has had lame results, i hope the edible community has more info than google and shroomery searches.

Some warm weather species off the top of my head:
Pleurotus citrinopileatus
Pleurotus tuberegium
Pleurotus florida
Agaricus blazei
Agaricus bitorquis (more or less)
Calocybe indica
Volvariella volvacea
Hope that helps, I can't think of any more atm...

I understand all the strains, it's just hard to find them except for pinks and such. I need like PL. ostreatus florida var. and hericium florida var. Is there any place that sells these?

Most ostreatus strains available come from cooler places. Im trying to find wild specimens but it takes a lot of work and time. Maybe someone can hybridize pinks and kings and give it to me! Hah, i'll keep dreaming, but i bet people would pay top dollar for a pink king oyster that grows at room temp if it is even possible to do...

I'm already growing ostreatus at 80 degrees f. but its not even april and florida gets insanely hot. I'm making some climate controlled grow huts but if i can grow some strains without ac that just gives me more options and costs less.

Most oyster mushrooms grow better in cold weather. They get denser and more flavorful when grown in cooler temps (50's-60's). V. volvacea is definitely an option for you. They thrive in extreme heat, and require it. I've heard A. blazei can be found in florida, and of course there is pleurotus florida. Yellow oysters will take the heat too, and they taste superb. I don't know how hericium would do in the heat, but it seems like those thin fragile teeth would dry out pretty quickly.

Hericium grows naturally in florida and is usually found may through july(when its hot as hell and pure humidity). Lentinula boryana is a species id like to experiment with as well.

I guess i just have to find wilds and clone then spore print.

I do have most of those warm weather species including volvariella volvacea, calocybe indica, and pleurotus Florida.
Do let me know what you have for offer.
Vishal.
