let it sit
could be water droplets dropping off the top and hitting the substrate see if theres water near the blue

its dry alright, blueing of the substrate is a clear sign that its drying out. perhaps you could case that bad boy with some moist pastureised verm/peatmoss. that will help hold moisture into your sub and create a nice microclimate to allow for a good pinset.

yah i think you should wait, and yes you can use striaght verm. ive only once had a problem with contam in casings. ive used them a few times. they have greatly increased the yeild of one and two pint trays.
just take a big ol tube sock, and stuff a good clump of verm in there, and tie of the sock. then boil it at 150 degress for an hour or a half hour. let cool an then apply a one inch layer to you tray ( wash your hands well first).
best of luck.

Note: don't BOIL. water doesn't boil at 150 degrees F you need a meat thermometer to tell the temp... but yea try to stay around 150 if you can..

oh yeah i forgot to mention that. but yea its not the water you need to be at 150, its the center of the tubesock. so if you have a meat thermometer you could just use that. (get a cheap one form your grocery store.)
and yes do that case one tub and leave the other, it will be a nice comparison.

Unless its a MS inoculation... Then all comparison is out of the question...

ya i understand pasteurization.. i have a slow roaster with a probe and digital temperature readout . I have just never cased and been told not to by a few experienced friends that said its a big contam risk.
whatever though, if this batch goes i have 6 jars of koh samui colonizing and 6 of treasure coast colonizing.... always good to have back ups :-D

casing is easy
the reason people get contams is they use wrong stuff
just use
40% verm 40% peat 15% perlite 5% drywall or oyster or something
bring to 160F in less then a half hour, hold for 2 hours the most important part is bringing temps up fast, if it takes long then its more of sterilization, this is how it was explained to me by i think RR
