"Rare" Rotting Flesh Mushrooms... Apparently edible?
    #14123579 - 03/15/11 02:50 AM (12 years, 11 months ago)

I meant to post this here awhile ago to get some feed back but it slipped my mind. But since my mind's been racing all night and I can't sleep I figured I would finally do it.

Well anyways, I think it was during December down here in South West Florida, and it had been raining for days. I decided to walk these new trails the county had decided to put in this preserve that's across the street from my house to see if I could find any mushrooms. I found lots of Boletes because, well, it is a forest you know... When all of a sudden I got a huge whiff of this horrible odor! I thought an animal had died and its rotting carcass was laying a few feet away from me.

I came to a clearing in the woods and found these bad boys growing EVERYWHERE.

From what I can tell, and referencing my mushroom field guide, they are a kind of Gasteromycete known as Linderia columnata. Notice the brown ooze thats seeping from some of them... I can't imagine how you're supposed to eat these. I'm posting this because it says in my field guide that these guys are very uncommon, and they are edible (although they smell of fecal matter so one can only imagine how they taste), but were literally everywhere in this forest. I'm curious to know; a) how they taste, and b) if they are worth anything. Because if they are really so uncommon I may be next door to a gold mine

It is now known as Clathrus columnatus

The eggs are edible, fry them up and let us know how you like them.

Ahh okay, thanks for the update. And I will, I'll post here again when I try them. I'll also go look for some more when it gets rainy and take more pictures.

Those are cool man.. Ive only come across a couple different types of stinkhorns, all of which happened to grow in my front yard. Never seen one in the field.
