shit was heating up when i lived in northern crete in '09. very demonstrative people. however, i will say that the greeks have completely put themselves in this situation. nobody really works there, and consequently they have very little tax money to publicly fund anything. don't get me wrong, it's a beautiful place and the people are awesome, but quality of life there is simply not what it should be. you can't have electricity and plumbing that works if all you want to do is sit on the porch and drink coffee. sorry, that's just the way it is.

Because things break, and they need work to fix. Also, you need to work to actually build something to begin with. If you sit around and drink coffee, you wont fix or create any plumbing or electrical infrastructure.
How do you think plumbing and electricity got to be?

I don't know if firebombing police in the streets is an action properly classified as 'lazy'.

Sure it is, firebombing is easy - light a wick and throw. Working, building, creating and saving is hard. Destroying and complaining are easy, and the lazy way out.

The Greeks ruined themselves - no one did it to them. They should look in the mirror.

My favourite Greek riot was when they locked a lady teller in a bank and then set it on fire and burned her alive

Yup it's true, but we're too lazy to mount any protest fiercer than stealing intellectual property.

Your response assumes that if one person in a society makes the choice to sit on his porch and drink coffee all day then all members of that society will do the same. That's not really how it works, ever. People get bored and do things to make themselves stand out (or at least to be noticed and admired by members of the opposite sex). I don't think we need to permit the existence of systemically corrupt tax bureaucracies that funnel the hard-earned fruits of our labor to white-collar criminals to maintain that uniquely human property.
Try as you might to call the protesters lazy freeloaders, that's not what this is about. How can you call a doctor who treats his patients and then refuses to take their money on behalf of his broken government a "freeloader?"

i won't pretend that the greek bureaucracy isn't corrupt, because it is. it's a mess over there. but literally, nobody works. the majority of businesses are open maybe 3 hours a day and everyone cuts major corners to avoid paying taxes. i'll expound on this. basically, there's a law stating that if your home or place of business is under construction you only have to pay 30% of your property taxes. what you see when you walk down the road in greece is building after building, from shopping centers to residential places, with walls on the roofs with doorways cut in them, columns sticking up etc. most of these places are finished, but the owners just don't want to pay the taxes, so basically you have a vast majority of the population paying less than a third of what it should be paying to support public works projects. the greeks haven't been paying for awhile, and consequently the country is going broke.
i'll try to dig up some pics from when i lived outside of chania that show what i'm talking about. it's crazy.

That's actually pretty hilarious about incomplete buildings... and yeah, pretty irresponsible.
Still though, I'm really outraged over how the financial industry is scalping the free world. No degree of public outrage seems good enough. It's going to be the death of capitalism, and China's going to eat us alive because they were never stupid enough to hand all their money over to coke-addicted compulsive gamblers.

dude, it's the funniest shit ever. and i'm with you on greed fucking up the world. that doesn't mean people don't need well funded, well run governments. anarchy is just not a good alternative. the irony though, as i was saying before, is that it's not corporate greed that has put the greeks in their situation, it's their laziness. don't get me wrong, i love 'em as individuals. one of the most impressive cultures i've encountered. but civilization requires capital. no way around that for now.
