There is a lot of research revolving around addiction in psychology and one of the more popular methods to attack this with is the Stages of Change model. This model proposes that each individual falls somewhere along a continuum in terms of how willing they are, or how far along the changing process they are. Briefly, these are the stages:
- Precontemplation
(Not yet acknowledging that there is a problem behavior that needs to be changed)
- Contemplation
(Acknowledging that there is a problem but not yet ready or sure of wanting to make a change)
- Preparation/Determination
(Getting ready to change)
- Action/Willpower
(Changing behavior)
- Maintenance
(Maintaining the behavior change) and
- Relapse
(Returning to older behaviors and abandoning the new changes)
Do you think that these stages apply to fears as well?

These stages are arbitrary bookmarks in a process, that probably apply to just about any kind of change you willfully commit to.

I agree. But they are extremely functional for discovering what environmental support should be sought depending on where in the process one is. If one intends to overcome a fear or an addiction, this seems like an invaluable tool. Most change can be accomplished without environmental support, but fear and addiction seem like two that will benefit from an extra push if actual change is sought.

Ay, fear and addiction have a way of creeping back on you if you aren't paying attention, I'm partial to the Bene Gesseret Litany against fear, from Frank Herbert's book, Dune, it doesn't eliminate fear, but helps you see it as something that you can separate yourself from.
Quote:
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
