Building a bbq/fire pit!

I got clearance from the co-owner of my house (my Dad ) to knock out this little tree in my back yard that blocks the entire view of the yard from the kitchen window and also dig a fire pit towards the back for bonfires and bbq. I have to check my zoning laws to see where it's okay to put it, does anyone know any general law about it?

My friends are pretty excited about it since my house is usually weekend party headquarters and it's the season for this kind of thing. If all goes well I should be having a pig roast on 4/20.
Any tips on design/materials? I'm thinking a 3 foot diameter circle about a foot deep, but I don't know what kind of rock to use... Cinder blocks would look kind of tacky...

i think the general law is that if your neighbors aren't pricks, just do it and nobody will care

Call your underground utilities locating folks before digging. Towns and counties differ in ordinance. Some only allow the covered elevated fire pits.

Depending on where you live you may need a burn permit.
I know here they are like 28 bucks for the year. However if the FD rolls up and you don't have one the fine is just under 600$. I'd call the local FD and check the laws. for fires anyways.

I've got about a 6 foot diameter fire pit in my back yard. I went to lowes and got a butt load of paver stones, the kinda shit they use to line driveways and walkways. Overlap them in a wide circle, make sure that everything beyond that in a 10 ft radius is clear and you are golden.
I'll take a pic of it in a little bit to show you. I use it to burn shit as large as pallets or as little as a few twigs in a little camp fire. It's completely surrounded with sand and there are a few chairs and a swing out there.
The nice thing about using those paver stones is that you can change the size of it. I recently expanded mine from about 4ft diameter to 6ft for like 30 bucks. Those stones are on like 2 bucks each or cheaper and I have mine stacked 3 or 4 high. I think all in all, I have about $400 in the setup, including chairs and tiki torches.
Fire pits are great, especially quality ones. I use it ALL the time, except when it's either too hot, way too cold, too windy or if there's a burn ban in place due to dry conditions.

I just found my borough's website and emailed the zoning guy. Parties just aren't the same without a bonfire.

Good Advice. Call the local fire department. I know that in the last town that I lived in (Bloomington, MN), the ordinance said that the fire pit had to be at least 20' from the nearest building, and could be no larger than 3'x3'. I didn't need a permit as long as the fire pit conformed to the ordinance. I only know the law for that city because my landlord at the time made me check before he allowed me to dig one...
-------------------- The fire has many things to teach. But so does the human experience.. which is like fire, sometimes you just need to stoke the coals and sometimes you just need to add a log or reposition the log matrix. But a well built fire will be much more self-sustaining than a poorly built one, and they all need love to grow. And don't fuck around or your might burn yourself. Must always respect the fire. - Shroomism

I'm in a suberb and like i said we need a permit. but one block down the road they have to have one of those outdoor fire pits like:
http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10051&productId=202073379&langId=-1&catalogId=10053&ci_sku=202073379&ci_kw={keyword}&cm_mmc=shopping-_-googleads-_-28-_-202073379&ci_gpa=pla&locStoreNum=2725
It used to be you had to call the fire dept every time you had a fire until they put the permits in place. shit's so different in every town.

I can burn all year with no permits because it's agricultural.

I live in a suburb too and have never had to get a permit to burn. I just abide by burn bans and everything is gravy.
Now my brothers friend was clearing land and even though it was zoned agricultural, they still had to get permits. But then again the fires they had were on average 80-100ft tall. One night we lit up a bunch of brush and could see it from the gas station we went to get beer at, 10 miles away.
Mine on average are 6-10ft. Big difference.

My town requires fires to be covered with something, like a grill, but like other have said, as long as you're not reckless and have cool neighbors you're golden.

Well the neighbors to the left are old folk that don't really talk too much. They don't complain about any noise in the house so I think they're cool.. The neighbors on the right aren't attached to our row, they have a single house with like a half acre of land, and come off kind of snooty. We were out one night cooking off this little gas burner we made from coke cans cooking burgers and we shot the shit for a while but other than that we don't speak or really acknowledge each other. We're not friends but we're not really enemies either.

What a perfect way to get to know them better. Invite all the friends and neighbors over for a few beers around the fire pit. That's how I met my neighbor to the left.
And he liked ours so much he built his own. Pretty much copied my design too, that bastard!
