new to cubes. does strain choice for first grow really matter that much?
    #14123788 - 03/15/11 05:59 AM (13 years, 10 months ago)

good morning all,

As the title implies i am new to cubensis cultivation. I have grown out shitakes and oysters from spore to fruit and Lions Mane from myc colonized bags to fruit.

So far my plan for the cube grow is shaping up as follows:

inoculate 6 large (3-5 lbs) PF tek style bags (2:1:1 recipe with some coffe grounds int here for good measure)

incubate for colonization

fruit in SGFCs just like i run my shitake blocks

i already have a good grasp on the cubensis life cycle and fruiting requirements from my shitake cultivation.

i have pruchased almost all of my gear/ substrate/ other stuff already. 23qt pressure cooker en route, bags and injection sites already here, BRF n verm already here, SGFC already made, bag incubation area already setup.

i need spores but im kind of confused by all the different "strains" of cubensis available .

my background is that of urban botany. im good at it, real good. been at for a long time now. i suppose when i think of strains of cannabis i remember all the stupid choices i have made in the past...trying to flower a a monster tall pheno of super silver haze inside, trying to run outdoor Jack Herer to late in the season, fucking around with SE asian haze crosses inside, etc. my point is that cannabis strains have very different growth parameters, nutrient, and environmental requirements and selecting the wrong strain for what you are intending to do can really fuck you up.

i know how to grow shitakes and the three strains i have all colonize and fruit in pretty much the same conditions. the jumbos take a tad longer to colonize and the "goldens" fruit fast as hell but other than that its all pretty much the same.

how much different are all these cube strains? for a first time cube grower, with previous mushroom cultivation experience, will it really mater what strains i select?

is there anything i should avoid for my first cube run becuase they are more difficult than other strains (you know like giving anewbie gardener some super Silver Haze clones and telling them to go at it in thier 3 ft wide closet garden)

is there any reason i cant start with one of the trusted vendors "overstock" specials or "random 6 pack" sales?

I am looking for any shiitake strains, any oyster strains, and lions mane cultures. i got cool edibles to trade.

"Mycologists on the other hand grow for the love of growing.  They want to experiment with various species, substrates, and fruiting environments. They'll move on to isolate strains, attempt hybridization, and in general treat cultivation as an artform, rather than a chore that must be performed as a means to an end.  They'll work twice as hard for a ten percent gain, just for the love of perfection..."

I'm also new at this but from what I've read and heard, growing cubensis is nothing like growing the herb(also had my good and bad days;)) Someone correct me if I'm wrong but for the most part they all grow pretty much the same. I just took advantage of Sporeworks deal where they choose the syringe for you(most likely from overstock) but they only cost something like 9.50 but if you buy 4 or more it becomes 8.50 a piece. I think the only "different one was the Penis Envy but even then the growing parameters are the same as any other cubensis but it just takes longer. this place is full of myco genuises so hopefully someone can confirm or deny me;)

they are all the same, they will lock this thread.  Gotta use the strain guide that is sticky up top.

regardless it makes no difference, buy the cheapest one you can find from a reputable dealer.

100% correct. A cube is a cube. PE is a mutated strain so it shows some peculiarities.
To the OP: choose any cubensis "strain" and start growing. Good luck.

Since he is a n00b PE is the only strain I would suggest not to choose, because n00bs are naturally impatient as fuck and PE takes even longer to "do its thang" than "regular" cubes.
