so Doc T and I were discussing this in the pub like two weeks ago, and if I recall correctly he said he has just been using jars for petri dishes. Now, If I were to attempt this, would I be best served by using Parafilm to cover them, or simple a sterilize jar lid? Also, assuming sufficient agar content, how long of a storage period, in the fridge, could one expect. At this point it would basically be a big slant right?

I recently used this grocery store agar tek with success. I omitted the tyvek and put jar lids upside down.
Left them covered with foil in the fridge for a week before using them. I bet they would do fine with more long term storage as long as they are covered well.
They had some condensation which made viewing tricky, but were successfully sterile and workable for me. They just take up a lot of room.

You can use small jars, they work fine if you need to do some agar work. Obviously petri dishes work better though. If you want to store cultures for more than a year, buy culture tubes and add a small piece of wood to your agar (RR uses tongue depressors).

I wonder if jello shot cups would work, they lack surface area, but if you can work around that I don't see why it would be a problem.

i use baby food jars. 2 jars fit inside a ziplock baggy so you dont need any parafilm. I pc the empty baby food jars in a spawn bag with the agar. Then I pour em and put 2 per ziplock in front of a flowhood. So easy.

Just drill a small hole in the lid and place micropore tape over the hole. PC the whole jar with the lid on it, pour the agar and then screw the lid back on. I do this when I run out of petri dishes or if I need to clean up a badly contaminated culture that will require many transfers.

No need for holes.
An undrilled plastic lid, or an undrilled metal lid turned upside down, will work great for agar jars.
Also, pour agar into jars and then PC it. Easy. Or you can store it cold in the fridge, slice pieces into the jars, and PC.
