WTF does running have to do with raising money for charity???
why dont they donate their own money instead of running?
why do ppl need someone they know performing some arbitrary task in order to give money to a charity?
...is this like a 'look at me' type scenario or something?
it just makes no sense. i dont get it. pls explain.

As a kid I did a 25 mile walk for the March of Dimes charity. It was a challenge and a social event that I am glad I participated in, but I asked myself the same question(s).
Why not do an event that actually generates revenue or builds/accomplishes something?

there are so many of them they make a lot of money for charities from donations and sponsors. they also make people feel good about themself for raising money and getting exercise while doing it.
once more WTF is with this question. you must be fucking stupid if you can't realise the answer from your first post. 'ppl who go for a run and ask other ppl to sponsor them for charity' THE ANSWER TO YOUR POINTLESS QUESTION IS RIGHT THERE... they do it to raise money for a charity.

Might want to edit your post before a mod sees it.

i understand that it works. it just seems stupid.
it seems like any time someone wants to do some random thing for entirely selfish reasons i.e. i wanna train for this run to lose weight i wanna sail around the world to be awesome i wanna travel to the south pole to lose weight and be awesome
they seem to justify it to everyone else by tagging a charity on the end
'i am doing it for charity'
fuck that.
are they afraid that people wont understand why they are going to the south pole and think they are odd? do they feel like they wont do it themself unless they have some external motivation (i.e. i dont feel like training for my run today... but i am doing it for charity so i better go!!) are they trying to manufacture a meaning for an otherwise seemingly meaningless exercise?
why not go on whatever adventure you like? give to whatever charity you like? seems silly

Basically you are saying we shouldn't give to charities at all...
Oh wait we can donate to those charities which exist within the void and have anonymous black drop boxes made out of black holes... there are no people working for this charity it simply exists as it's own shadowy entity in another dimension...
Is this what you are saying?

hey. why dont we extend this discussion a bit further.
ppl who perform an action which would be seen as dubious, shadowy or questionable to a societies ordinary moral conscience, justify it by some greater cause which in reality is unrelated to the action, so people accept the action...
im thinking suicide bombers.
people who run for charity are just like suicide bombers.

Offensive to what? Suicide bombers or charity runners?

I've seen more offensive statements in my cereal today.

People do all sorts of things to raise money for charity, it is not necessarily instead of giving your own money (assuming you have any to give!) but encouraging others to do so as well.
Okay, so you have established that you think this particular means is ridiculous, and arbitrary, so what?
I could name any number of things I personally think are stupid...but is that really the crux of your post?

Aside from the personalism and angry tone, I think this is fair enough actually.

You could put walk-a-thoners on stair-masters and generate electricity for impoverished neighborhoods, or something.
