Morel ball? pre-morel? wtf?
    #14121503 - 03/14/11 08:00 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

I kinda smashed it before i could take a pic... i was in the forest and found a couple of what look like Morel substance hollow balls, about a half inch by a half inch, they both were not growing out of the ground rather loose as if someone dropped them, but i found them in different parts of the forest, about 30 min from eachother. and neither had a cap or any sign of one. anyone heard of such a thing? are these a half attempt at being a morel? wtf?
some other pics from my walkabout:

the first one could be a Gyromitra or a Helvella something.
2nd is a ear pick fungus Auriscalpium vulgare
3rd looks like Mycena maybe.

yea for number one was thinking either Gyromitra or maybe some kinda cup fungus. its hard to tell. did it have a prominent stem?
#3 is likely a Mycena species.

the 1st was morel-like, it was wrinkled and had the same texture as a morel, and was a misshapen, wrinkly (like a morel) hollow ball, with a small opening that probably once went to the ground, no stalk. i've seen plenty of orange, red, brown and black cup fungi, but never anything off-white yellowish such as this, plus, when it was in the ground it had no cup surface, but was more a sphere in the ground. it's strange, confuses the eff out of me. the second was crazy, growing from a pine cone and if you can tell it was toothed not gilled. The third, is very pink, are mycenna species usually orange? anyway thanks for looking

the "mystery ball" was almost as if a morel tried to grow, but only grew a stem and stopped. it was completely hollow like a morel

Sure it wasn't just a discarded stem-butt from a morel hunter that came through before you?

I find those all the god-damn-time!  :cranky:

shockvalue, that's what i thought at first (i've found them as well), but it was a ball, with a small circular opening, if it'd been a discarded stem  butt, it would be a cylinder with two openings... plus i found two of them, since morels, as far as i know haven't started yet (cos i'm out almost everyday checking my morel spots) maybe it was some attempt of a morel with no cap? or a new species? i also found 2 of them, in tact hollow balls

Lots of different species of fungi can have some pretty extreme morphological variance.  Try to go back to the same area and photograph another, intact specimen.

Gyromitra would not be found in this habitat, also the coloration and the fact that it has no stalk or cap, is just a hollow ball. and there are many helvella so...? still just google image searching helvella, they're either cups or stem and cap

I thought you said it grew a stem and stopped... Did I misunderstand something?
