cakes aren't pinning?
    #14109583 - 03/12/11 03:37 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

So I'm using the BRF cakes and I've had them in my shotgun terrarium for around 2-3 weeks now and they aren't pinning. The cakes I did before these grew well for my first time so I'm not really sure what's going on. What is the most common reason for this? Is there some kind of hidden contamination I'm not seeing? Could they be too late to save now since it's been so long with no pins? I can probably take some pics if that would help, any help would be great. Thanks

Do you mist and then fan 3-5 times a day? Is your fruiting chamber in an open room getting the circulation it needs?

What's the temperature? If it's a little cooler in your house they tend to grow slower. A friend of mine's cakes took a little over a month to pin.

I mist as often as I can probably about 3-5 times a day actually. I fan, but just recently I started to fan a little more because I'm thinking I may not have been fanning enough. The terrarium is in the corner of the room up high on a shelf. I think I'm going to move it and see if that helps. It's just weird because I did the same thing with my first cakes and they grew pretty well.

What kind of an FC?

Re dunk and give it a lot of FAE...evaporation is THE pining trigger!

It can't hurt.

I still think 2-3 weeks isn't that long.

I had the same problem.  Cakes sat for 2 months with no pins.  The temp was about 60 degrees and they didn't have enough FAE.  I made a SGFC, but I didn't put holes on the bottom.  I put a small heater on them that comes on with the lights and raised the temp to 75-80, then it drops back down to 60-65 when dark.  I also put a heating pad under the FC on medium that helps evaporate the excess moisture in the perlite and raise the humidity. After I made these changes, I started to see pins in 3 or 4 days.

Are you misting them too much maybe? If they stay wet they might not pin, FAE, light, and evaporation are pinning triggers:shrug:

I'm a new grower, but I'd like to add that my cakes weren't pinning for a while.  At that point, I was misting more than I was fanning.  Then someone suggested I use an electric fan on them (instead of just fanning them with the shotgun lid, which is what I was doing), and so I started doing that for about 2 minutes every hour... and now there are pins everywhere!!

Could it be possibly too much FAE? I have an overhead fan that I always leave on that gives off a steady draft throughout my room... it always seems like my cakes are really dry, so I'll end up misting them a lot.

Lets see a pic. My bet is that the humidity isnt high enough

Oh no pins NM lol, are you keeping them wet or do you let it evaporate some before you mist again? Do you mist the finest mist you can like a fog a foot or two over the chamber or do you spray the crap opt of them and then fan till tor arms hurt?

And yes a fan going near your chamber will wick out the humidity. You sure you built the SGFC to specs?

here's some pics, my humidity has been on the low side lately, idk why the first time I had no problems keeping the humidity steady.

the overhead fan is about level with where the terrarium is

I've been heavy misting+fanning lately to try and raise the humidity, the cakes seem to dry out really fast

very small tote with too many holes, I would tape some of the top hole and use the right size tub with the holes spaced correctly next time. The design is supposed to create a negative pressure area at the top making the air flow through the bottom holes providing FAE and humidity at the same time. A fan will mess with that and also the hole ratio in a SG that isn't the right size.

Add an inch or two of perlite and tape up so,e of the top holes, there is a tek for a mini SGFC somewhere, you should have followed that for the whole pattern, all those holes in the top are letting your moisture escape and probably passing the FAE over top your cakes instead of from underneath them and past them.
