Rye Germination

After soaking rye for 24-26 hours I noticed that it had start to sprout. I know that the PC will kill it to keep it from growing, but should I soak a few hours less. I was fascinated by how fast it sprouted so I did a little experiment. I took a cup & put dirt in it, placed about 50 Rye seeds (Berries) in it & then put about 1 inch of dirt on top of it and watered. 3 days later the Rye had started to grow & pushed the 1 inch layer up & out of the cup. If only I had been trippin. It looked like a large cap coming out of the cup until it pushed it al the way out. Maybe someone will be able to save some Rye with post.

You were supposed to rinse the grains before soaking in scalding hot tap water, and then begin the soak in hot tap water. This pasteurizes the seeds so they don't germinate. You should also never soak longer than 24 hours. RR

RR; I did rinse in hot tap water, 4 times just to make sure. Water was hot, to hot to put my hand in, but I'm sure it cooled down after a few hours. Didn't replace the cool water. Had only planned on letting them soak about 24 hrs but got held up at the bar. I'll bring a 6er home next time.

If your jars have been soaked/PCd for three days I would start over, you should inoc them as soon as they are completely cool to give the spores a head start on the contams. JMHO
Just like RR said, scalding hot water for the rinse and soak, boil 10 minutes and then shake in a strainer immediately to remove outside moisture. PC them and then noc em up so they can reproduce, take hold, and be more resistant against contams ASAP.

Yes all of that was done, Rinse soak, boil, PC & knocked up. I just noticed after soaking for that long that the Rye had started to sprout and thought I should soak for like 16 hrs and not stop at the bar when its time to load jars & then PC. The Rye in the cup is already over 6 inches, just in case u want to know. Shit grows fast, was my point.

After knocking up a qrt with 1CC I shook. We'll see what happens. I figure if u shake to break it up, why not shake to spread the juice around.
And I am going to try growing some Rye in the garden. Bet the deer will love it!!

I was told not to shake by RR, he said that it would separate the organisms trying to get it on and make it harder for them to find each other.

If I remember right, RR said not to shake for a few days after putting in from an agar culture.
