My first round with Passion flower
    #14118757 - 03/14/11 10:38 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

So I recently got some passionflower seeds in a trade with another member. (thank you El Douche.)

Just planted this morning!

I have never seen them, or knew anything about them, so I was going for the gorgeous flowers on my deck this year when I got the pm with the picture. But, I just did a quick search and read that these can also be smoked? Pretty cool Bonus!!!!!

Takes a while to germinate, don't give up, they'll sprout

For the flowerz you have to wait at least to next season :alert:

In the winter will be dead to raise again with warm weather :dancer:

What type of passion flower are they? i started some passiflora caerula and some passiflora incarnata. So far only one pass. caerula has sprouted and it took almost a month for that one to pop up

I'm not sure, but the pm I got specified that they were a non-tropical species native from virginia through tennessee.I have just briefly researched them , so there is still quite a bit of info I don't have.
Edit: goggle says it is incarnata

These are my babies. There are 2 that came up in about a week. That is N. Rustica everywhere else.

These are the same ones a few weeks later. I planted these when I sent yours out. They are still bigger than the tobacco, and they should outgrow it. They need to be pretty warm to germinate, but once they do, I take the lid off.

They are doing pretty well, so these 2 should flower this year, I believe. I planted a few more a week ago, and now have one coming up.

Keep them warm and moist, but some just don't seem to want to sprout untill months later.

Hey Ozzy, ive sprouted passiflora incarnata. out of 30 seeds one or two sprouted within a week and over the next 3 months maybe 7 more came up. they seem picky.
when it reaches a decent size the vine sends offshoots underground and they pop up a few feet from the mother plant. that makes for easy rooted cuttings in the future.

That is the size when mine started making offshoots

as far as smoking goes. I used to roll joints out of plain passiflora incarnata leaf. The high is mild but easy going. For me it would last about a half hour - 45 min. I also make tea from the leaf and the flowers.

Thats pretty cool Waxi, Nice open land around you.  I have to look at my alley and people using their backyards as parking lots for junk cars.:grrr:

upthread it was mentioned that I wouldn't see flowers till next year. I would assume the same goes for the fruits?

Also, do you cut them back to overwinter them, or do you try to keep the plant intact? If cutting back does that affect the flowering next year, or once it is rooted it is all good.?

Waxi, when you say the effects were mild, how mild would you say? like say I wanted to ease some muscle tension, does it do that or is the high more cerebral?

Also, does making the tea make the high last longer/ more potent?

I bring mine in for the winter. I cut the tops off the ones that are in the cold basement. The tops seem to die anyway, and new ones will grow about a few weeks before I could move them back out.

When I bring mine in for the winter, the tops dry out and die. If they dry fast, they are usually still green. If they are in a warm place, they will start new growth. In a cold place, they will go dormant for a few months and start growing when it warms.

Cutting them back does not affect the growth or flowering for the next summer.

I have over 20 seedlings now. If yours don't sprout, Ozzy, I'll send you some of mine. I had 30 seedling a few years ago and could not get rid of them all.

Thats the hardest part with growing little baby plantlets =(. It's always painful to wait day after day to see that little seed-covered head pop out of the ground.

Always worth the effort though.

For medicinal purposes you want specifically Passiflora Incarnata. I get a 90% germ rate by doing a warm GA3 soak for 24 hours then put into a mini greenhouse. You most definitely will get flowers the same year, hundreds of them

Definitely the most psychedelic looking of all the flowers.

Do nurseries sell ga3 or where do people obtain it?

The first batch I tried, I got 2 sprouting with in a week, then nothing.

The next one I tried, I put in orange juice (cause it tastes awesome), but than left it too long and it soured. I used that and planted it in a "to go" container. It molded like a MFer. 2 sprouted from that. Then, after the lid was off under a light, it dried out. BAM - 20 sprouted.

So I do not know if it was coincidence or not, but the seed hulls are thick, and maybe some molding and drying out is necessary for a quick germ?

I had 30 sprout at once a few years ago, but I didn't pay much attention to that. Maybe they need to go through something to really sprout in mass.

Just throwing ideas around.

I have read that they are not viable for long, and that they need to be planted within 1 season.

Plant some tobacco seed in the pots, that way the effort will not be wasted. And if they sprout later, they can climb the tobacco stalk (N. Tobaccum, N Rustica is short (12")).

Whatever happens, I have plenty. I'll send you some if your seeds do not deliver. I still have a few more pods also.

Thanks Ozzy.

- This is one that I planted when I sent you the seeds -

This has some of the second batch in it as well.

I would get all my hormones from this guy: MOD EDIT: Removed vendor link; but sadly he's temporarily out of business. You can still get it on eBay for cheap though. It's called Gibberellic Acid.

El Douche is correct. The seeds need the release of the hormone to germinate. Ga3 is that hormone that needs to be released so a soak will trick it into germination. In nature it takes the acid from the fruit and the change in temp to trigger the release.

I got the seeds from a sponsor and have tried soaking, planting, planting in a heated seed started, now I've got some weeping willow branches in the glass with the seeds. Hoping they release some salacylic acid into the soaking water. Gonna let them sit another 2-3 days then plant them. I'd love to get ahold of some incarnata seeds, mine are the actinia.
