Chernobyl and Pripyat fascinate me.
there was lots of looting in Pripyat and surrounding areas after the evacuation, most were caught trying to sell the goods, pawn shop owners had geiger counters to detect the radiation, it gives a new meaning to 'hot goods'

The entire fallout area, the EURT or Eastern Ural Radioactive Trace, was restricted and officially renamed the Eastern Ural Nature Reserve. Still can't get in there
Pretty ridiculous.
you can but you have to have special permits and those permits are very hard to come by, some people are still living in the area and have never moved, when it rains it kicks up much of the material that had settled so the levels of radiation fluctuates frequently

the regulations are ridiculous, too
you need to wash all food with clean water, but all the water available is unclean with radiation
cows must be grazed on grass only five (I forget the exact number, but it's arbitrary and unrealistic) inches or longer
no more that three hours accumulated near the surrounding woods per week

The Mayak plant also dumped its waste into lakes and rivers nearby for 10 years before the accident. I am fairly sure that they actually willingly released more radiation through that dumping than the accident did.

Nuclear power plants follow pretty simple principles. It's actually just a kind of steam power. But it's still hard to imagine just because the heating implements themselves are so fucking bizarre and disconnected from anything you'd normally deal with in daily life... very high-maintenance shit.

https://morgsatlarge.wordpress.com/2011/03/13/why-i-am-not-worried-about-japans-nuclear-reactors/
This guy has a good idea of whats going on.
I've done a shitload of research on nuclear reactors and the incidents we've had, theres nothing to worry about with this situation, the ammount of fear mongering out there is obscene, and the real bitch is that its all these people that are so afraid of reactors that are forcing us to keep the old models running longer and longer which is more dangerous than if we would use the plant for its intended life cycle.
