Some questions about my WBS jars
    #14116921 - 03/13/11 10:34 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

Not yesterday, but the Saturday before that I PCd my WBS jars and left them for inoculation on Sunday morning when the jars cooled. And on Friday morning I noticed a really thick white growth in my jars. I assume it means everything is going well.. I just have a few questions.

I am sort of worried that it might be a mold of some sort. Maybe cobweb? I'm not real sure though because it doesn't seem to be growing extremely fast.

I also am worried that my WBS was simmered too much because I can see a lot of mushy parts and the seeds look like they are burst.

Another problem that really frustrates me is that my jars are 100% full. I can hardly move any WBS around inside them.. and the entire middle of the jars are stuck together in a WBS mush..

All this worries me.. except for the fact that I have growth in 3 of 4 of my jars after about 1 week.. and it looks like in 2 of the jars the growth is coming out from the mushy middles of the jars. Also, the growth is occurring in different locations in each jar..

I wish I could take a picture, but the only camera I have doesn't show any of what I am talking about because it is such bad quality.. I plan to do a few more jars this week, I am just wondering if these jars are a failure? They seem to be working.. from my knowledge.. but this is my first time so I really have no idea.

Any input would be amazing.

You're fine. Post pics.

You should see lil beads of water in the jar. I've overboiled n used burst seeds with great success actually, over pcing is where your troubles lay.

If it is thick and white then it should be mycelium. Cobweb is usually wispy and a little different in terms of color. I am just wondering how you innoc'd these jars. If you started with spores and there is a lot of growth already then it could be mold because it takes a week usually for spore to germinate.

you'll know if it's cobweb in ~24 hours because it very rapidly and exponentially spreads over all of the jar, from what I've read about it.

but yeah, pics when you can, and we can give you a better idea of what you have going on... or off would probably be more accurate.

You should be fine. The only real problem is that its tough to shake the jars, which will really slow you down. Millet (main grain in WBS) is very fragile and will burst easily. If a lot bursts, what you should do before loading the jars and PCing is to rinse them really well to get off all that sticky starch.. at least until you can shake it up.

Also, spore germination time varies. I've done strains that germinated in as fast as 36 hours, others up to a week.

WBS is a perfectly fine grain to use, so that 'use rye' crap doesn't fly..

once you get your grain prep down you're perfectly fine...

after your soak, then simmer for 10-15 mins strain it, stirring every 20 mins or so to allow the steam to dry the outside..

then after about a hour to 1.5 hours load your jars, add a pinch of gypsum ( this will keep your grains from sticking together ) and PC

and you're good to go.

grain prep can be a bitch and dude seriously I've had more trouble than people think but I found something that works for me and is relatively easy. I posted under Millet a la cyanara.
check it out.

Yeah, I'm mostly just worried because I can't shake the stuff. And I made my own spore syringes a day before I inoculated. Got my prints from FSRE and used considerably more than I needed to for each jar and syringe.

I will try to post pictures as soon as I possibly can. Maybe 2morrow if I can find my digital camera and a way to upload the pics.

I know what I did wrong with my grain prep, and I planned to do another ASAP.. I was just wondering if my jars were okay.. because in my opinion they look wonderful.. but from what I've read and seen my jars shouldn't have been very good.. It also seems that 6 days is pretty fast to see white mycelium growth.. especially from a spore syringe (as i heard those take 3-7 days longer to germinate?)

the quoted time for MS germination is 7-14 days, but it can happen faster or slower depending on moisture, incubating temps, where you last placed that red sock with the yellow stripes...

I recently saw a jar start whitening in 4 days after MS... just be happy about it IMO  unless your white stuff is no good... pics!

This is the best I can do as of 2night. It's a pic I took with a webcam I found lying around.

It's still not very clear.. and I just shook my jars as much as I could (I figured I'd shake them before they got all clumped together and it became even more impossible to shake) so the white pieces sort of broke apart in some places.

Just one of the better looking jars and just the bottom where the most fluffy white stuff is building up.. I'll try to post some clearer pictures 2morrow as well.

Thanks again for the help

from what I can see, which is not very much it, looks ok. if your spores where fresh(er) then germination in that time is not unlikely.

Let it sit fot a week and forget about it. By that time whatever is gonna grow will have grown and you'll be able to check for contams easier.

I like to shake right befor the jars finish, not only to help consolidate the mycelium but if there are any contaminants present after the shake it will be apparent, also if the jar(s) contam you are not doing a G2G and contaminating a tone more of grain.

The 3 jars that I see growth in have a slight smell to them.. (if I stick my nose close enuff the the polyfil opening i can smell it) While the jar that I see no growth in doesn't have any sort of odor.

Still looking for that camera.. GDAM. :frown:

Okay cool. I was worried my jars were moldy and that's why they had an odor to them.. Or the WBS fermented or something.. It doesn't really smell bad though..  and its really faint.. but i figure thats the polyfil and coffee filter doing its job..

relax dude. It sounds like you're doing just fine.

a few burst grains are not a big deal as long as you don't have water pooling or starch sludge collecting everywhere.

Lessons for next time:

1. be sure not to over-simmer your grain, and rinse the starch off of it once it's done simmering.

2. Leave room in your jar to shake the grain.

3. IT'S NOT COBWEB :crankey: :smirk:

If your mycelium stops spreading/stalls, and/or if brownish slime starts to surround the kernals that are pressed against the glass, then it's time to worry.
