anomalous increase of the eccentricity of the Moon's orbit
    #14114969 - 03/13/11 04:35 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Ok, so I know we have some genius level shroomerites here, so I figured you may be interested in digesting this.  I found this link on another board, and some of them were worried about the implications presented in this paper, others were not.  Whats your take?

Warning: Not for mathophobes!

Doesnt seem like much of a change at all.  10-12 per year?  I read the paper very quickly, it didnt seem very hot to me.  It was a bunch of paragraphs hand waving predicted values of e-dot, and some with no predicted values.  Most of them seemed to be focused on alternate theories of gravity which seemed a little premature to me.  I was hoping for detail on why the eccentricity change of 10-12 was odd at all.  What do standard theories tell us about it?  How much of the solar system's constituents are they taking into account, and what are their error bars?  Where does the value of 10-12 on the distribution of simulations?

Remember, this is literally the original three body problem.  And when you are talking about orders of magnitude to the trillionth decimal place, over the course of a year... then you are gonna need to take into account a lot of bodies to try and model that.

Where did you get this paper?  Did it get accepted somewhere?
