The video shows some techniques used by differents types of mushrooms to satisfy their demands in azote.
What they do, is capturing and eating soil nematods by different adaptations of their hyphae. Predators mushrooms dont present these modifications if nematods arent present in the soil.

Cubensis will also trap and destroy nematodes. I discovered this back in the 1980s when I had a bad nematode problem in my outdoor garden. Spent cube substrates took care of the nematodes within a month or two of application, and then fruited after that the rest of the season. RR

I wonder how many of the psilocybe species do this? Gets me thinking that P. baeocystis is one that may use this tactic, but I have no evidence to support this claim at the moment. I find much healthier and agressive mycelium where spawn is in contact with native soils. I've noted that the mycelium changes from fluffy and not very agressive, to very rhizomorphic and super agressive around these areas
Awesome video!!!!

So i guess that ill put the part 2 up
I got access to pretty nice videos where i work. Like movies of the developement of ascocarps and conidias. I might try and get my hands on them!
Also, i didnt know that psilocybes could do this aswell :P
So they might not be that weak then hehe. Could we get the specie that tested positive to the control of nematods RR?

I have viewed this through my microscope when studying two undescribed Psilocybe species from New Zealand, it is very interesting.
This phenomenon is linked to the capability of many species from a few different genera in the Strophariaceae to produce conidia or asexual spores in their mycelial structures, this has been shown in species of Stropharia, Pholiota, Psilocybe, Hypholoma, Kuehneromyces and Melanotus, these anamorphs are extremely interesting and can be used to provide further identifying characteristics such as hyphal cystidia, acanthocytes and conidiogenous hyphae that range from being straight to extremely coiled, many of the conidia formed by these species have been proven to be capable of germinating and forming viable cultures.
Here is a link to a PDF with relevant information, it's just the abstract but the complete paper can be purchased, it is not expensive. http://www.docstoc.com/docs/55900814/Anamorphs-in-the-Strophariaceae-(Basidiomycota-Agaricales)(Report)

Amazing find, thanks for posting. Always interesting to see how nature plays out. Considering what this video brought to light, there may be countless interactions, functions, effects we don't know about.

Since i recently got alot of messages on youtube asking questions about this video.
I decided that it was worthy to bump my old post to share the video with you guys again.
Slightly off topic, is it me or there is an increase in the interest of mushrooms?

Thanks for bumping, so very cool. I was aware that chytrids attack and parasitize hosts and are responsible for disease chytridiomycosis that is currently decimating amphibian populations, but had no idea that Basidiomycota was capable of predation.

So would the introduction of nemotodes into a substrate increase the nitrogen availability and lead to faster colonization? Or am I just stupid in assuming that.

Cool vid, definately worth a bump. Also you are probably right about the nematodes..I've also had many bins of straw that was composted outside full of maggots from some small fuzzy light blue fly that I've only seen one season...anyway they colonized very quickly n before i tossed them back outside, after 3 or four day with lids on there were none left. So I know they dont have a problem with haveing a fair amt of crawly things in there. cool to see it happen tho, thanks again for the up.
