The Creativity Machine (man is now as god?)
    #14112390 - 03/13/11 12:09 AM (12 years, 11 months ago)

I've been watching a bunch of documentaries lately-- many of which have to do with consciousness, society, spirituality, etc... and I came across this one video discussing a "Creativity Machine."

The claims made were pretty extraordinary. The gist, from what I gather, is this:

Some guy invented a machine which is capable of human-type creativity. The machine has written songs (some are even good), and invented new chemicals, among other things...

Allegedly a number of the products you use today are inventions of the machine--including the Oral B toothbrush.

Why have I not heard of this before? Does this not have amazing uses and implications? Why have all of the world's problems not been solved yet?

I still barely know what to think or say.

Good article about this from 2004.

Here is the original video I saw, which is longer:

And here is a shorter vid I found:

The progression of AI towards a machine or program that is capable of increasing its own intelligence is inevitable IMO... the Singularity is nigh!

Click click click... it does not look so. Even after googling.

This is truly creepy.

On Christmas Eve 1989, Thaler typed the lyrics to some of his favorite Christmas carols into a neural network. Once he'd taught the network the songs, he unleashed the Grim Reaper. As the reaper slashed away connections, the network's digital life began to flash before its eyes. The program randomly spit out perfectly remembered carols as the killer application severed the first connections. But as its wounds grew deeper, and the network faded toward black, it began to hallucinate.

The network wove its remaining strands of memory together, producing what someone else might interpret as damaged memories, but what Thaler recognized as new ideas. In its death spiral, the program dreamed up new carols, each created from shards of its shattered memories.

"Its last dying gasp was, 'All men go to good earth in one eternal silent night,'" Thaler said.

Now THAT is some poetic, haunting, and just-slightly-scary shit.

Did we accidentally ask the question to the answer 42, and get the riddle of death solved?

I have found many conversations online.

If you mean the story, however, I think I've either read or heard of it years ago...can't recall it now...

...however, without an author's name, googling "a conversation" is mostly an exercise in frustration, or so I've found...

The whole story...sounds..like..such..BULL  You would think if he built a computer network capable of producing new thoughts that it would be breaking news across the globe, our at the very least he could have put out a decent looking webpage.

Look at how fast news of the watson computer got around, and all it did was answer questions from a database.

Seems plausible to me... artificial neural networks can be incredibly creative, especially when produced by simulated evolutionary algorithms.  I didn't watch the whole video to find out if they used that method to produce the ANN(s) used in the creativity machine but it seems likely IMO.

Yeah, but we are talking about different technologies in different times and political climates. The implications of this are much, much bigger.

I was just reading comments on some other page discussing this, and the point was raised that if this were legit, the military would have jumped all over it. From the articles, it has been said that this guy has been working with military.... but only the invention of one "smarter" bomb was mentioned...

...if they came out with some AMAZING technologies... do you really believe that ANY of us would have any reason to know about it before there was an opportunity for money to be made from this? And if so, why?

Also, I was re-thinking that creepy line, and what I came up with was this. The technology seems to come up with innovation in a particular field for which it is given a basis of knowledge.

The basis of knowledge that produced that dark, ominous, hopeless (but pretty and poetic) line about life ending in the ground and loss of consciousness.... came from a dying database that had been taught CHRISTMAS carols.

Sorry, that seemed profound to me.

interesting as fuck.

Only about 1/2 way through and probably have to finish tomorrow...but WOW so far. Thank you.

Oh, also, a number of the things he describes about "his world" are actually paralleled in a book called "Seth Speaks," which was by Jane Roberts-- who claimed to be channeling some kind of discarnate being, who basically spends the book talking about what the other side is like, and misconceptions humans have.

It was one of the most interesting books I've ever read, and I like to think if there is an afterlife, it is something like "Seth" describes it.

Oh, and to the naysayers, who think this is bullshit, and we ALL would have heard of this years ago...

I started this thread this morning, in the earlier morning hours. Initially it seemed like it might turn into a cool discussion, but after a good bunch of views (most of which came quickly) it started to diminish in popularity...

...my settings give me the max number of threads on a page, and when I woke (maybe 8 hours after posting) I see that it is maybe halfway down the pub... which is probably like page 5 for noobs.

So yeah... this amazing tech was even announced on the shroomery, and quickly ignored for clearly more interesting and important topics.

think I just realized we're fucked as a species.

LOL, AI mimicking human intelligence is like airplanes being designed to imitate birds. Computers function very different than biological brains and are a long way from having the practical capability to simulate anything that's got half the thangs goin' on as a human brain.

If you really want to talk about humans becoming god, skip to the part where we built a machine that prints watermarked DNA so we can reprogram single-cellular life forms to our every whim.

They succeed in reverse-engineering cellular biology (which we now have the practical interface to do) the possibilities in purpose-developed life forms could very well solve a lot of problems we have outright.
