Mace is effective up to 12 feet. A stun gun is effective only at knife range. That to me is a pretty goddamn significant difference.

yeah, for mace, but isn't pepper spray something different?

Aren't switch blades illegal? I think you can score a concealed weapon's charge with one of those.

I just bought a knife very recently, like a few months ago.  As I was walking in to make my purchase (farmers mkt) some gentlemen bumped into me/tried to walk through me.  I stood still (as opposed to moving out of the way) and an altercation almost broke out.  I would have had to stab them both with an old shitty knife :frown:.

If you want a blade for personal protection, longer is better.  You need to know if you want to conceal or not.  A concealed blade usually has to be shorter than 3 inches but different states and municipalities differ.  Anything less than 5 inches or so isn't very effective imo.

Spring-loaded blades, like the one you're mentioning, are sometimes illegal depending on your region.  IMO they don't offer much more protection either.

I like fixed-blades.  Nothing is quicker than drawing a fixed blade out and imo fixed blades tend to be sturdier and allow for a more solid strike.

Whenever you're armed: ALWAYS run away if the situation permits it.  Don't get into a fight unless you're cornered, there is a chance you will be intercepted, or if you're being assaulted with ranged fire.  If someone is running after you, run away from them.  Don't be an ego-whore and wind up getting seriously hurt or killed.

If you want to hurt someone, find them when they aren't suspecting it and do it.  If you're being assaulted always assess the situation and determine if you can separate yourself from the conflict.  It's never ideal to engage in combat that someone else has initiated.

IMO though a blade should always be viewed as a last resort weapon.  You are better off knowing how to fight well and not having a blade than not knowing how to fight and having a blade.  If you really want to protect yourself, you should be fully armed (firearm).

"Don't bring a knife to a gunfight."

The epitome of personal protection (or aggression) today is the firearm.  Small and long arms pretty much dominate the category (explosives, blades and hand-to-hand combat being thrown in there too)

Whoops, forgot about mace/OC.  Mace and OC (pepperspray) are different, look it up.

Pepperspray works well in tandem with being unarmed or in tandem with a knife.  If you have a knife and some pepperspray and can draw it quickly you even have a (minimal) percentage chance of defending yourself against an attacker with a firearm.

Pepperspray is a great first-defense weapon.  Every kid should start out with it when they're young (supervised, 1-5 second MAX spray canister) and should wind up spraying themselves in the face to see what it's like (which is terrible, I know).

Thanks, I actually didn't know that. I thought tasers were for cops only.

electric weapons don't work well when the person is in contact with you

cause then you both get zapped

so ellen, if you get one, be quick to act if you have to use it

The concern I would have with a taser is, what if you miss? Those things only have one shot, right? Mace you can just hold down and spray.

these pepper spray rings are pretty nifty as a concealed weapon

lots of my bicycle riding friends carry super heavy duty chain link as bike locks/impromptu weapons

not true

I forget why, because I have no real knowledge of how these things work, but I know lots of stun guns/tasers will not transmit the shock if you are in contact with the assailant

Another good question.

Should the attacker be touching you, the current will NOT pass to your body!

Stun devices work on high voltage but very low amperage. Amperage is the current that can pass through one person and on to the next until it finds a ground to end at.

The voltage produced by stun guns begins to dissipate immediately within the muscle tissue of the person directly contacted with the current.

I own the same exact knife you have pictured in your post and i love it and carry it most of the time just in case. The blades probably 4.5" with a wildly sharp point. Opens in the blink of an eye if you have the little safety thing off, which you should keep it off if you need to use it fast like you very well might. The last thing you want to do while your being attacked is have to realize the safety is on and then have to slide the thing while panicking.

and i think they are sexy :naughty:
