Flowhood Construction
    #14112974 - 03/13/11 04:24 AM (12 years, 11 months ago)

Hey guys,

I've been a long time reader of these forums and just got around to signing up a few months ago. First time post.

I just got my tax money and the first thing I wanna do with it is make a flowhood so I got a little money to throw around. I found a very nice 24x24x12 HEPA filter online. After reading several threads on flowhood construction I'm calculating that I will need a blower for this filter with 400 CFM, and then according to most people I should add another 20%+ CFM (about 480 to 500 CFM total) to that to make up for turbulence and other flow loss inside the flowhood and to make up for added resistance as the filter accumulates dust.

Am I correct with my calculations? Would it be a 500CFM blower at the appropriate static resistance on the filter?

Also, I've been looking at a lot of inline blowers and their data sheets start out at 2 inches static pressure. If a blower is 500 CFM at 2 inches of static pressure will it be the same CFM at 1 inch of static pressure or will it be much greater than 500 CFM? Take this link for example.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Jink

You might take another look.  The charts start around .2 inches, not 2.    Unfortunately, their largest doesn't flow enough at 1".  I'd check grainger.com for a motor.  Get a squirrel cage blower, not an inline fan.

I went with this fan for my 12 x 24 hood, and I had to buy a fan controller to reduce the speed. At about 75% it produces laminar flow. I imagine the 10" from them would support 24 x 24, or the 12" just to be safe. The 10" from them is only $167 and the 12" is $197, which is cheaper then I've found on grainger but you can't find specs on these fans, just have to take my word for it.

Perhaps the squirrel cage fans last longer or are more durable, iono but I've personally used this 8" fan for about a year and half nearly continuously. First in my grow room as exhaust where it ran non stop for 8-10 months, and now it's ran for ~30 hours in my flowhood and I've had 0 contams.

Oh I see what I was getting confused on. That link I posted had several charts listed and some of the charts have static pressures listed in H20? I guess I shouldn't really be paying attention to those? Because there is the bottom chart and that lists the static pressure in WG.

RR, I know that you and a lot of other people recommend the squirrel cages, and I'm not set on any particular type, I'm mainly looking at prices and the inlines DO tend to be higher in price, but I was also looking at physical size. Because it would be ideal to fit the fan inside of the flowhood. I have looked at the blowers on grainger as well and probably will get a squirrel cage.

You all never answered my question about my calculations. Are they correct? Is 500 CFM at the appropriate filter resistance right?

500 is perfect for 24 x 24.

2' * 2' = 4' * 120 = 480 cfm @ 1" Static Pressure

I would go with a little more rather than a little less because you can always restrict the flow but you can't up the power.
