Todays edible mushroom hunt - lots of photos!

Had a good hunt today around my usual spots. Decent variety of edibles to be had out there. I got a new camera for my birthday as well, so it was a good chance to try it out a bit. Just a digital cheapo - but far better than my old one. Hope you enjoy the pics!
Trametes versicolor - Turkey Tail

Bolbitius vitellinus - very large mature one.

Phyllotopsis nidulans

Amanita ocreata - Destroying Angel

Amanita novinupta - Western Blusher

Amanita velosa - Spring Amanita

Amanita calyptrata - Spring Coccora

Cantharellus californicus - Chanterelle

Hygrocybe punicea

Camarophyllus pratensis

Coprinopsis lagopus

Ganoderma applanatum

Russula cyanoxantha - forgot a habitat shot

And the results?

Thanks for looking!

Nice score, Lhun. How do the Amanitas taste? How do you like to cook them?

The Grisettes (constricta) taste a bit like almonds. The velosa is sweet and delicious - my favorite for sure. The Blusher (novinupta) tastes a bit like both of the above combined - sweet and nutty. The Coccora will be a new flavor for me. I have several nice fresh ones, so Ill update after I have consumed some. I have found them in the past, but only felt comfortable collecting them for the table recently. Alan was up this way not so long ago, he confirmed the identification. So its time to trust my judgment and enjoy a few!
I usually just saute the Amanitas with salt and butter. They have such good flavor on their own that I try to not overwhelm it too much. Thanks for the comments folks.

You should see the various ways I have to strap/bundle/tie all those mushrooms on my person to get them back down the mountain in one piece! Its become a game of "how many can safely carry" and "how can I carry more"? Sometimes I come down looking like a bunch of grapes - bags and bundles hanging everywhere.

Since I usually have so many to eat, I want the majority of them to last many days on that table. Broken mushrooms don't last long...

One of my favorite for sure. Very sweet and mild. I wish I not only found more, but that I found more before the bugs do...
Thanks everyone!

Just an update after eating some of that Amanita calyptrata/calyptroderma (Coccora) for the first time. I found it to be my least favorite of the four. Its bland and mildly fishy. Butter and salt didn't help much. Too bad, Coccora come in giant sizes, caps like a frisbee! If only the velosa were found like that.
So order of personal preference by a long shot :
Amanita velosa (sweet nutty flavor)

Amanita constricta (dark nutty flavor, almond like)

Amanita novinupta (more subdued than velosa, but similar)

Amanita calyptroderma (fish like, somewhat bland)

I've noticed that the coccora I've been finding are inconsistent in taste. The first one was excellent, the rest so far have been good, but nowhere near comparable to that first one. Garlic definitely helps the taste though.

I have three more uncooked as of yet Byrain. Ill try one with garlic. Thanks for the tip! I would not go so far as to say that Coccora tastes bad, just not as good as the others. Im not a big fan of "fish flavored" mushrooms anyhow though.
I found a bunch of Agaricus bernardii earlier this year, and they REALLY taste fishy. Bleh - (my wife liked them though - to each their own!) Neat red bruising:

Great stuff Lhun! I look forward to hopefully trying out some Amintas this spring.. posts like these help me find my way - so thank you! I just found the motherload spot for yellowfoot yesterday, it was incredible. I thought I had found a spot before (I doubt you recall the post), but this spot blew it away. Unfortunately I found the spot about a week too late as about 90% of them were way past their prime.
Anyway. Cool finds!
