First Bulk Grow Advice

Hey everyone. I used to be around here a bunch and just recently came back after around 2 years of doing other things. 2 years ago I had several successful brf cakes as well as experimenting using popcorn as a grain (easily available and simple). I have decided to return to mycology as well as shroomery Just wanted to say Hey to everyone as well as run my plan past you guys.
I have experience with casing grain but never tried using any substrate such as straw before. Unfortunately I never saved any equipment or cultures but it is exciting because i get to start all over again!
My plan is to get a print and use agar to isolate some solid looking growth and then transfer that to quart jars with rye berries. I want to then try out Shroomgod's straw tek but have also been considering using coir (with nutritional additives) as i have seen good results. Coir seems to suck up a TON of water and since mushrooms are for the most part water it seems like a feasible idea. I am not sure what to do for casing but i plan on doing this in a single large tub. For FAE i am considering the use of a humidifier and some holes in the tub with poly-fill, but i have never used this before.
I am just hoping to hear from a few people and get some feedback. You guys have taught me almost everything i know today. The other thing that has taught me a lot is making a lot of mistakes and some terrible contamination I intend to put up a grow log once this gets started because i have always loved reading over grow logs and never made one myself.
Thanks everyone!

you can do a mixture of coir and straw if you want, but if your first time doing bulk i'd stick with coir and verm...since its alot easier and you dont have to do a real pasteurization of it
also you dont need a casing layer for cubes, its just adding an extra step that could contam your grow, so i'd leave it off, simple is better for your first attempt...

how large of an effect does a casing layer have on yield and potency? I always thought that the more moisture you could have in there the higher the yield would be and casing also has nutritional value which would add to the potency. I know i still have lots to learn though so it is awesome to get feedback. any suggestions of how to keep humidity and fae up for pinning? is there a risk of it drying out quicker without casing?

As far as i know a casing layer is non-nutritional and is only used to retain humidity on top of the substrate. I also know that a casing layer is unnecessary with cubes and does not effect potency and if you need the extra humidity boost you can use a piece of wax paper instead.

a casing is a non nutritional layer to help retain moisture and keep humidity up, if you have a problem keeping the humidity up then yeah add one, but i'd say you'll do fine with a normal monotub.

ok awesome. This is actually going to turn out to be easier than i was trying to make it!
after doing a little bit of reading based on these coupe of posts i think i am going to drop the staw and go with damion5050's coir tek. it looks pretty solid and easy to work with. also i am planning on soaking my rye in gypsum which i wasnt going to do before.
i came across an interesting argument though which has raised some more questions. I saw that many people were claiming that "a cube is a cube" while some were stating otherwise. there seems to be a lot of confusion with the words strains and species and subspecies. could anyone possibly clarify that for me? I have personally only bought spores 1 time before. I went with B+ and did g2g transfers and cloning. This is the first time in a while that i have been faced with the decision of what "strain" i want to use.

they are all basicly the same, with a very few exception...Penis Envy is known to be a bit more potent, but its also known fo rtaking a bit longer to colonize and fruit, as well its known for giving mutant blobs on the first flush...
