So, how do you plan to keep it sterile?

Yeah, a big bag might work. Sterilize the cake wrapped in an extra foil envelope. Open and inoculate inside the bag like a glovebox. Then just let it colonize there.

I'm trying to entice bored cultivators into learning modular origami.
Er um... It's for science.

I'm thinking. .. I would colonize some WBS or rye. Spawn it to some bulk (coir would be easy and is contam. resistant). Mix it all up.
Fill your strong paper origami form (the origami has been pasteurized ... or maybe you could get away with microwaving your paper ... I would treat the paper with some sort of hydrated lime bath) ... anyway, fill the paper form with the bulk substrate (high spawn ratio).
Put in a clean container (your bag sounds good). It should be 100% in 7 days ... let it consolidate a bit.
Then fruit it in a SGFC or greenhouse.
edit: It is similar to fruiting a stuffed animal that has been stuffed with bulk and colonized. But, your paper is not tough like the polyester fabric of the stuffed animal. that's the problem.

So like, what about GrundgePaper, Im not really sure what that stuff is made of, but my wife is a scrapper.
Basically, its a flex/bendable paper used in scrapping, I think Tim Holtz created it, but I would check it out, because I imagine that it is made with some kind of polymer, that would help with water retention.

If for fae, I don't think it would be needed since they are far from air tight, but maybe just sewing needle holes all around the model if it seemed necessary.
I'm going to search some for clear or relatively transparent/foldable paper. It would prob be made from some odd material that may not be conducive to this purpose.

Bump for I need an edible to try this out. I may link this to the marketplace for that but mush cult is kind of slow tonight so I figured I'd give the thread another chance.
