Nice early finds msanchez!
I went for a wander in West Gippsland the other day - not with mushrooms on the mind whatsoever - and managed to see a few inactives.
Looking forward to a bumper season ahead of all us Australians!

Cubensis and Cyanescens grow in NSW too, but to the north. Southwards you can get Subaeruginosa, and gymnopolis but they are extremely weak and bitter tasting compared to Subs

Hi everyone,
I'm relatively new to the forums, and I've been waiting for this thread to pop up (so to speak)for a while now. I'm from Canberra, and well, well, what can I say? There are apparently shrooms growing in the mountains all around here, and I never knew! I understand it is a little early in the season, but would it be worth organising a first-time hunt with some friends sometime this month?
Anyway, I will certainly be browsing this thread with enthusiasm, so good luck and keep those ID pics rolling in to help a newb out .

I have found large cluster of Gyms, but due to the large volume of Ps. Subaeruginosa and reports of Gym's as much weaker and bitter tasting have never personally tried them. Maybe one day, but I can find 30+ Kilos (wet) a season of Subs that can last myself and friends many years (stored properly) so I have never really bothered with Gymnopilous Junionus. I am interested in the species nonetheless, amazing stuff

Get out there and have a look, season is VERY early but I am located extremely close to ACT, so it would well be worth looking in the mountains around the ACT in wet and well shaded areas Especially within the next 2 - 4 week through to Late July, just keep looking! I learnt everyhting I know from these forums, and have found more and more every season hunting since 2005 You will learn alot follwing this thread, and check out the previous years NSW season threads using the search feature of these forums!

I have been debating the same thing. Seems a little warm to me, but then again the mountains are always a bit cooler.
If you are looking for a big haul then I would wait, but if you just want enough for you and a couple of friends then it might be worth having a look.
I was near Adaminaby a while ago and it was quite a bit colder there, so that kind of altitude might be a start if you want your best chances. But with petrol prices the way they are you might be best off just waiting a little longer.
