some old puff ball species?

Habitat: Where does it grow? Eg. woods, pasture, state, province, country, altitude, etc. What does it grow on? Eg. soil, dung, wood (dead, living, what kind of wood?), etc.
in the grass in a park
Gills: Color, attached/not, gills/pores, etc.
i dont think there was gills or pores
Stem: Length, diameter, color, texture, hollow/solid, thin/thick, etc. thick, spongey texture. brown, mycelium attached to base.
Cap: Diameter, color, texture, conical/spherical, convex/concave, etc.
looks like it has been folded, a dirty whitish grey color.
Spore print color:
Very important!
didnt print it and dont know how. Bruising: Color that the mushroom bruises, if any.
Other information: Scent of the mushroom, anything else you think is important, large close-up pictures showing stem, cap and gills.
the folded look on the cap really resembles this wierd find from last year. it must be a puff ball species?

heres the one from last year. they have the same folded top.

Definitely looks like a deflated Lycoperdon/Calvatia of some sort. Not sure what else it could be....

Neat stuff man! Old puffballs are so cool looking. This is a total guess but maybe Calvatia excipuliformis

I was thinking that but it doesn't sit all that well with me. I'm rough guessing but mightn't it be Hypomyces, cf. hyalinus?

I see where you are coming from Joie, but in Symon's photos, the specimens appear to have an actual "deflated" puffball on top, rather than a mutated looking fruiting body. Although I could be wrong. That's just what I think.

Cheers for the feedback, I could be way off but it hasn't split very puffball-like and seems to have a distinct rim so I'm scratching my head about the ID.

The Calvatia ID could be off as well, but I saw the picture at this link http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/forums/fungi-forums/8533-weird-fungi-needing.html and thought the stipe looked very similar. The picture is of an older specimen as well. The top is not "deflated" in appearance but other than that it appears to be the same as Symon's find (although the ID at this site could be off as well)

The pinky sponginess does support Lycoperdon and the images in the link also make me think I was mistaken to discount it.
