Pressure cookers that whistles??
    #14108324 - 03/12/11 11:04 AM (13 years, 1 month ago)

Well I have a friend that has a canner and when it is on the stove, it whistles. and you have to listen to that whistle for 1.5 hours while you are sterilizing. I'm looking for a PC online and I just would like to know what to look for, and how to avoid the PC's that whistle.  Cause I have another friend that has about 5 PCs and none of them whistle.

The one I am strongly considering is this one:6 Quart PC

On a side note, I was wondering if anyone knew how many pint jars you can fit into a 6 quart canner.
Thanks

Edit: I'm not sure if all pcs have a rocker on top, but I would like to avoid that at all costs as well. I' trying to be as inconspicuous as possible.

They whistle because pressure is being released so that the thing stays at the pressure that you want or so they the thing doesn't explode. If you get the flame/temperature right then you can reduce it.

Check Amazon for good prices on All American Pressure Cookers and Presto Pressure Cookers. It will also tell you how many jars each will hold. I have an All American 921 and it's great.

Also, 6 quarts is nothing. If you're gonna get a Presto then at least get the 23 quart.

unfortunately I cannot find on amazon, or presto's website how many jars each cooker can hold, or what psi it levels off at.

If you scroll down then you'll find it under 'product features'. The Presto 23 quart says:

"23-quart pressure cooker/canner holds 20 pint jars or 7 quart jars"

The All American 921 says:

"21-1/2-quart pressure cooker/canner holds 19 pint jars or 7 quart jars"

You can fit another two quart jars at the top if you lay them down on their sides.

I forgot to mention the pressure. The All American Pressure Cookers have a weight that lets you set it at 5PSI, 10PSI or 15PSI. I am not sure if the Presto is variable but I am assuming it might just be set at 15PSI.

The All American will out live you and because it uses a metal to metal seal then you won't need to replace gaskets etc.

They say 7 qts .. but they hold 7 qt. jars on the bottom and 3 more qt. jars sitting on top of the others for a total of 10.

edit: both the Presto 23 and the AA921

ok. I found that info on the 23 quart canner. But it doesnt show it on the 6 qt.  Yeah after some math it put it in perspective. I can fit 5 pint jars in a 6 qt. thanks. (but then again, that doesnt make too much sense)
I may still get 6..maybe 8, for price is an issue.

Now I'm just concerned with how loud that rocking is.

I do 7 Qts in the Presto. I don't trust laying them on the side. This is,after all,a hobby for me.
