Anyone ever tear their ACL? *pic*

Today I was skiing through some crud, and I caught an edge, it twisted my knee, and I fell over, the pain was so intense I could only lay there in the snow for about 5 minutes. After the pain subsided, swelling immediately started to occur. I got myself back to my car with difficulty, and now I'm at home with a brace. I know I can still move laterally, so I don't know if I tore my ACL or what, I do know i Felt a pop, I did not hear it though.
Can you walk on a torn ACL? I'm having issues extending and compressing my leg.

As in any kind of situation like this my advice is: If you have health insurance go to a doctor.
If you don't find some place better than the Shroomery to seek advice.

I tore my MCL last week and I'm still limping, I bet that's what you did too. If you tore your ACL you would probably need surgery.

Health insurance doesn't mean shit in america. You'll still pay around $1,000 out of pocket costs on an MRI alone...

You can decline ya know.
If you go in and the doctor says "There's no way you have a torn ACL" then you aren't paying much money. If he says he wants to do an MRI tell him no if you don't want to pay for it.
But either way if money is a concern I don't think asking the Shroomery is the best idea. It's all poor uninsured motherfuckers that, even if they have had serious injuries, probably haven't cared for them correctly.
P.S. Depending on your insurance MRIs really don't cost very much money. http://www.delphifaq.com/faq/household/f916.shtml http://www.costhelper.com/cost/health/acl-reconstruction.html
So on and so forth. If you ski (and do other active things, which I know you do) I, personally, would get it checked out if I had insurance.

You should really go to a professional man. It'll be shitty if you have to get a referral for a specialists appointment, but its a lot better then risking further injury without proper rehabilitation. It's not just acl/mcl tearing that can occur, there's a bunch of ligaments and muscles that all function for the success of the knee. If you fucked one of them up it'd be best to know.
But yeah, referral system on U.S. healthcare sucks! While attending college I got a stress fracture that went undiagnosed through 2 doctors visits (emergency and orthopedic surgeon). That was two sets of xrays. Then, over spring break (when shit didn't get better) I went home, got an appointment with my reg. doc to get a referral, and then saw a sports physician. Two more appointments, two more sets of xrays. By the end of it, 4 appointments, 4 sets of xrays; and me sitting with the majority of the tab. Healthcare should cover everything for its monthly bite out of my income. *rant over*

I'm going to see a professional, I can't though because it's a weekend, so my option is to try my best to figure out what's going on until then. My knee is 3x as big as normal. I took some melaxicam or something, hopefully it will help.
Also, MRIs aren't cheap. Not if you get contrast, because they're going to also do a local anaesthesia for the injection which also costs money. Amazing how Every Little Thing costs money. I paid nearly a thousand out of pocket for my MRI for my wrist. Probably around 700$. The insurance covered like 65% of it.

How swollen does the knee usually get with an ACL tear? I'm thinking it might be the MCL.

that's dependent on the person, I barely had any swelling on a broken ankle, I also dont bruise unless it's a serious impact and and yes, you should be able to walk with a torn ACL or even a broken hip, it's just going to hurt like hell
immobilize it, try and keep weight off it and use alternating cold/heat and compression to assist with swelling and pain

One of my friends recently tore her ACL... for the third time. The ACL is a ligament for twisting so you should be fine walking around.

Jesus titty fucking christ! I feel for ya man.
If you can track the pain to specific places (or just one place) then grab an anatomy book and try to match up the region to a ligament. Best of luck at the doc., keep us posted.

Not if you have good insurance. It would be like a $20 copay for me.

Damn I wish I had good insurance, unfortunately I have a slight medical history, including massive ear infections that nearly killed me as a kid, and some other issues. Insurance companies rip me off.
I felt a popping.
