Oil rigging
    #14109413 - 03/12/11 02:59 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but if isn't mods you can move it.

I'm currently 19, broke, about to finish my 1st semester of college, and I'm going crazy from living with my parents, they repress me and barely let me have a social life and that's bullshit. I want to have lots of cash, fast so I can be independent and get a place on my own. I've got nothing going for me and I think this can be a good thing for me. /endrant

I see the opportunity to make very good cash with no skills/college required for the oil rigging entry level position (roustabouts)

I know it is very hard work and I think in the end, I will be glad I ended up working and making the $$$

Anyone ever work there or know about oil rigging business? I know its a 12 hour work day and the place I am looking at is offering 2 weeks on 2 weeks off

Think its a good idea? It would be ballin if I started now and by the age of 23 I would have over $200k

You make a shit ton of money at a time. You'll either make about double what you'd make at your hourly rate because of overtime, or you'll get a day rate of up to several hundred a day. You'll typically have benefits if it's for a larger outfit, and they'll be decent - typically at least 80/20 insurance and a 401k

The actual work are long shifts of stop and go hard work - you bust ass to set up or hang a joint of pipe, take it somewhat easy while it drills (this is when you do all the light work, as well as eat, drink, piss, etc). It gets way fucking hard at times but other times it's pretty relaxing

It isn't the worst work in the world, but on bad days it's close - it's probably ahead of crab fishing and underground coal mining for example.

The keys to getting through time as a roughneck:
1. Avoid letting some asshole or woman pay your bills for you - this used to be the downfall of many a roughneck. Pay your bills from your phone, this is the internet age.

2. Don't blow your wad on your two off.

3. Don't go into debt. You make a shit load of money and you can't use your toys most of the time anyway, so don't go into debt. Put that shit in CDs something until you can straight up buy a house and car for cash

4. Buy the house and car for cash, in a college town, stop being a roughneck before 35, pay cash to go to school and get a degree in something. If you like the oilfield make it geology.

5. Every single chickenshit OSHA safety reg? Obey. Radically. The cosmos is trying to collect roughneck fingers for a necklace, and you don't want that.

6. Don't ever, ever work on tweak or work with tweakers

7. Don't knock up some hog from williston you only porked because you got all fucked up at the bar on the edge of the res on your way to the indian casino
