lophophora williamsii from seed questions
    #14095489 - 03/09/11 10:43 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

So I decided to try my hand at growing some cacti. I got 150 seeds and planted them.

I planted them on sand in little Rubbermaid containers, they are under a 23 watt 6500 watt CFL for about 14 hours a day. I also got a seed propagation mat with a thermostat that keeps them between 75 and 80 degrees. Im misting with distilled water once daily with a 5% 2-7-7 fertilizer. (I just started using the fertilizer)

So far everything is going great. I started them on the 1st and so far I have over 30 sprouts.

I guess I don't know where to go next. I know eventually I have to harden them, but I hear different info on when to do it.

Im also wondering the time line of when I should move them off the sand onto a different substrate. Im in no hurry at all, I know it all takes time.

If anyone that has done this before has any input at all I would really appreciate it.

I have other questions but ill start with these :cool:

I also took some pictures Ill put them up tomorrow Im too tired right now.

3-10 months is what most growers do.  pick your own time i like to wait until abotu 1/2cm or more.

after some time, if they keep growing up and not going wider, more light.

The seeds you won't sow are the plants you dont grow.

I used black aquarium sand that i rinsed with bleach water. Then rinsed with water and let drain. Its not the normal way to do it tho.

A guy on another forum told me he does it this way. Which I will do next time when i get more seeds:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The best way to raise seeds is to -
1. Grab a container w/lid, (Tupperware / (or cheaper option) chinese takeaway container works fine)
2. Burn some holes in the bottom for drainage (I use a heated fork)
3. Grab your cacti mix (1/3 Perlite , 1/3 coarse sand, 1/3 cacti soil is good)
4. Fill the container 1/2 way.
5. Soak the medium, bottom soaking works better cause drenching will bring the Perlite  to the top leaving you with a layer of Perlite  on the top of the mix.
6. Let gravitly drain excess water down out of the burning fork made holes.
7. Lid on.
8. Sterilize!! NUKE THAT SHIT!!! In the microwave for as long as you want. Depending on the size of the tub, about 5-7 mins is plenty.
9. Wait till it cools.
10. Open & sprinkle seeds on top.
11. Lid on, job done.
They'll be fine like this for at least 2-3 months without being opened or watered at all.
