Aspen woodchip "mulch"
#14108444 - 03/12/11 11:29 AM (12 years, 10 months ago) |

Just got a reply back from a local business in my area that produces a lot of aspen wood waste from milling.
I asked him about the size of his chips and he responded with, "We produce a mulch which is a wood chip that has been reprocessed through a hammer hog (big grinder) that reduces it to a size between the chip and sawdust."
Would it be ok to use this "woodchip mulch" as woodchips to mix in with sawdust or does this sound like it maybe to small for use as a chip?
Anyone have experience with what a hammer hog does to wood chips?
Thanks.

Yes, a hammer hog reduces the chip to the size between the chip and sawdust...

And so my next question is, does this make it not ideal to use as a woodchip to mix with sawdust?

So i just got back from a visit to this local business and am pretty psyched about his materials. This is what the aspen mulch looks like:
(that's one of them mini bic lighters)
I can get this and some nice aspen sawdust for $18 a yard.
Now hopefully it produces well. Anyone got experience with fruiting on aspen wood?

The mulch will be superior to using those chips. RR

So how long with this stuff last behind my house? I have the sawdust pile on one tarp and the wood chip mulch on another. I'm going to use a lot of the woodchips for outdoor beds but I can't make those until after last frost, which for me isn't til May... Will they be ok left uncovered or should I tarp the piles? How 'bout competing wild fungal species colonizing the wood while it sits there for a few months?

I am also interested in techniques for maintaining chips, as I will need to get as much as I can successfully use when I find some....they are not easy to find cheap where I am.
Good luck OP,

I read a pretty thorough research paper from some university-or-other about shiitake producing horribly, uniformly on aspen substrates. The one time I tried to use aspen pet bedding, it failed to colonize fully.
I will try to find and link the paper. My oysters liked aspen ok, but I've never grown any good oysters before to really know.

To my knowledge, aspen pet bedding is made of aspen wood "shavings" which is, also to my knowledge, a terrible substrate to use. I believe RR has mentioned this before, and I believe he also has stated that aspen wood chips/sawdust will perform fine with most species. Thanks for the link though, I don't think I will try shiitake on aspen...but I plan on trying a lot of other species on it (oysters, reishi, wine-cap, black poplar, etc.)

I've got a bag of that stuff I've been meaning to try for different things, so this thread is totally relevant to my interests.

You've got a bag of shavings or woodchips/sawdust?

Right.
...but the question remains...
How best to store chips? When are chips optimal? (i.e. how fresh/how long since they were cut? etc)
Anyway, good luck OP.

Javadog: agreed, I am still curious about storage. Doc_T: I just found the thread where RR mentions the use of bedding. It works fine if you use it mixed with sawdust... here's the link: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/9445343

I just talked to another friend of mine whose attempted oysters on aspen pet bedding. He said they loved it and he had good yields in his martha.

Nice, that's good to know..seems it's hard to find stuff oysters won't fruit well on.

Seriously.
I tried just plain straw. Zero amendments.
More fruits that I know what to do with shortly thereafter.

Good luck,

JD that's awesome. Here's a link of a grow I did last summer of elm oyster on nothin but straw. I did blue oyster the same way with excellent results, but the elm oyster blew me away. http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/14075772
