THE SHULGIN INDEX VOL 1 Psychedelic Phenethylamines and Related Compounds
by: Alexander Shulgin Tania Manning and Paul Daley
The book is available now. Order HERE

What is The Shulgin Index?
The Shulgin Index is the latest work by Alexander ("Sasha") Shulgin, the world's most prolific explorer of the chemistry and effects of psychedelic drugs.
The Index is a comprehensive survey of the known psychedelics, and will be published in two volumes.
VOL 1:
"Psychedelic Phenethylamines and Related Compounds"
The first volume presents:
- A structure-oriented survey of psychedelic phenethylamines, amphetamines, phenylpiperazines, and other similar compounds.
- Treatments of 126 main compounds with detailed physical properties, synthesis and analytical chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacological properties, and legal status. Fully referenced with over 2,000 citations.
- Sub-tables of lesser-studied structural homologues and analogues.
Over 1300 total compounds covered.
- Extensive cross-referencing tables for rapid location of key information.
- An invaluable resource for researchers, physicians, chemists, and law enforcement.
VOL 2 will be:
"Psychedelic Tryptamines and Related Compounds"
This volume will be available sometime in the future... no date set for this project.
Most likely it will be a couple of years.

That's awesome but $85 + 11 for shipping is outta my price range. Hasn't this been available (i.e., Erowid) for free online? Hopefully some of the book profits will fund furthur research in psychedelic medicine.

I really wish there was a digital download or .pdf to purchase for cheaper.

I am fond of real books, so having the same information on a HTML web page or as a PDF doesn't cut it for me. I'd much rather have the hardcover book. What I won't accept is paying $44 for international shipping. That's just absurd. Fuck it.

I have a zillion books I always carry to lab. Since getting my first o-chem textbook in a digital fashion I've never looked back. I have like 300 organic texts that come close to 2 gigs of HDD space. It's incredibly easy to reference and use virtual stickies if they're .pdf's and if not you can convert them most of the time.
It's especially useful if you only need a few pages for one prep or something, because you can just print off a few pages.

Are these 126 main compounds new? Or are they gonna be the same as his known phenethylamines?

I have a feeling once Shulgin passes away there will be a posthumous release of a book about isoquinolines. See:
http://www.mdma.net/alexander-shulgin/21stc.html
Which new "target compounds" are you researching?
S: I am currently totally caught up with an earlier interest I had had with the relationship between the structures of the alkaloids of the cacti and the poppy world. Most of this I had never published, but now I am resynthesizing and getting spectroscopic definitions of many fascinating compounds. One hears about a psychoactive cactus, thinks of peyote and mescaline. One hears about a psychoactive poppy, one thinks of morphine. And then turns to another topic. But both families are treasure houses of some remarkable compounds called tetrahydroisoquinolines, and I hope to put these findings together into a new book in the near future.

what do u do with that when you're studying chemistry. is it possible to produce those compounds easily? i've always asked myself if it was hard to produce LSd if you got some basic knowledge about chemistry. enlighten me.

There was no fire and the lab is currently in good condition.

McKenna's library burned; Jonathan Ott's place burned; and DW Pineal's place burned. I once knew a woman named Tammy whose place burned too.
There is a fire conspiracy, but methinks Shulgin left a good impression on the underground network of elves. His work is safer.

Yeah, I'm about as far from a conspiracy theorist as you can get, but I concocted that one too. Very odd coincidence, if it is indeed just that.

Going to check that out and see if they still have it. Thought about buying one and donating it to the Kansas public library

First off $85 is not a bad price for a new text book. Especially when you consider his age(old!), health condition(weak), financial status(broke), and his contributions to the field (PROMETHEAN).
As far as isoquinolines, the link provided to his interview was from 1998, he released the isoquinolines book in 2002. I guess that was what he was hinting at. Its a good book, basically a chemical reference book for academics and researchers with a decent price tag (but worth it).
If you care about the Shulgins and want the information, scrape some cash together and invest in this book! I've been saving a little every week since I heard about it months ago and hope to order it soon!
