Horse Poo PH is high without addition of buffer
    #14103654 - 03/11/11 12:04 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

Hi,

I just got some properly cured and leached horse poo to use as a substrate. I just did a PH test and the PH is over 8. I didn't even add any type of buffer yet.

Is this normal for h-poo? This is my first time using it.

lime is usually added to reduce smell.

Well, there is no smell.. so I wasn't too worried about that. But lime is usually also added to raise PH. I didn't realize that h-poo already had a high PH. Anyway, will see what happens with it.

really?

i thought it was added to bring the ph up

my horse poo has no smell

when i get it i leave in the sun for a few days and then the smell goes bye bye

i make sure all of my poo has no smell before using it in my substrates

i thought that high ammonia can cause problems

i thought a ph of about 8 is okay for mushies

just slightly basic enough to keep most contams away

I meant when the people handle the poo, lime is sold to spread around to reduce the smell of FRESH poo and urine.  Tends to linger even after composting

If it doesn't smell, isn't from the stables (that is, mixed with cedar or pine), and has been aged naturally to a golden hue, it's fine as is. i wouldn't recommend messin' with something that's already perfect by adding lime to it. Leave the lime for a casing layer and that's hydrated lime btw (water soluble). The other lime, by the time it broke down your substrate would be fruited to max, thrown in the garden, and then some before you saw any benefit.

Just break that manure up (it's called manure btw, not poo, just sayin' before RR gets to you  ), add 10% fine vermiculite (if you wish, although it's fine as is but don't skip the gypsum!), 5% gypsum, bring to field capacity, and pastuerize (140 - 160 degrees) for an hour - Inoculate the bulk with the spawn of your choice and you're golden ( just like your 'poo' ! )

Manure is an awesome substrate (my fave!) that is beginner friendly and well worth the extra week or 2 for colonization. Good Luck!

Alright, thanks for the input about MANURE (aka poo). I didn't realize that it was normal for it to have a PH above 8. The manure/poo/dung/shit/etc. has been properly pasteurized and is ready to go. I'll post later with results.

Not quite.  You don't add lime to horse manure when preparing.  I think you mixed up the straw and manure teks.

Some stables add lime to manure to control odor.

The bottom line is that when I mix horse manure substrate bags, I actually add a bit of vinegar to the water I use in order to lower the pH.  Since dry manure can't be pH tested easily, I suspect the original poster added water first and then tested.  If his municipal or well water is high pH, that will show up in a test.
