Thanks shroomism.

Right now I'm having a hard time imagining what it'll be like carrying all that weight with somewhere to around 5 days of food at a time and 1 gallon of water at a time.

 I would start hiking around with weights on your back to get used to it...
Carrying around 40+ lbs. of weight on the back is not natural.

the guy in the youtube channel when he started the trail weighed his pack in at 31lbs. not sure how many days of food was in that first pack though.

Go as light as possible on your normal gear. If you can get your pack base weight (everything BUT food and water) under 20-15 lbs you are sitting pretty.
Thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail is where ultralight hiking was born pretty much. You don't need a ton of gear. Lighten your load and your back/knees will thank you. I have seen ultralight thru-hikers with a total pack weight of 30lbs INCLUDING food and water.

Check this thread for starters: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/9664724
And also, if you are seriously planning thru-hiking on the AT.. here is your new bible: http://www.whiteblaze.net

Food, you don't need to carry that much on the AT. 2-3 days of food should be plenty. You can resupply every few days. Water is heavy, you also don't have to carry a TON of it... just enough to hike and hydrate you.. I never fully thu-hiked but I always just carried my water bottle full and my platypus 2L bladder full. If I knew I wasn't going to run into fresh water for a while I had an extra 2L bladder. When I'd run low I just re-fill, there's always water somewhere nearby on the AT.

I've done sections of it.... I always wanted to thru-hike but plans fell through I didn't have the time/resources.

Someday...until then I can just live vicariously through you

I like back packing there because You dont have to bring any water just a cup...Ill usually filter it through a shirt and not impurify the water with iodine...Its not really necessary for that area anyways but as far as outside and before you get into the national park..That might be a different story...

Not a good idea. The bacteria that cause Giardia are from animal feces in the river, probably the more remote you go into the woods the more animals there are going to be.

Have you ever been to the smokey's? The quality of water up there is unmatched in the country maybe minus colorado...The waters are constantly moving and dont really get higher than 45 degrees and that's in the heat of summer time...

How do you think the Cherokee survived there for thousands of years...The waters are 99.9% safe I would say...

I plan to thru hike the AT this summer. I need to do more research, but plan to begin in Maine in May or early June.
