Hi, I'm new here, and I have a question regarding marijuana and anxiety.

Greetings all. I was recently turned onto this board by a book called This Is Your Country on Drugs by Ryan Grim, and thought it would be a good place to present a recent problem I've been having. I've been an almost-daily weed smoker for about 2 years now, although my habit has been fairly irregular. I'll give you a bit more background and then expound on my issue (i've perused through the forums here and on some other sites as well, and you can probably guess what's coming because it seems like a fairly common problem)
I'm 18; first smoked at 15, became a habitual user around 16. Up until a few months ago I was mostly only able to acquire middies or "schwag," with only occasional treats of legitimate bud. A couple-few months ago I cut out the dirt and went strictly chronic, because it's supposedly healthier, obviously more potent, and I don't like indirectly supporting drug cartels.
I have never had any sort of negative reaction to marijuana before, besides maybe a heightened sense of danger (like that's a bad thing?) but recently I've been showing signs of anxiety and mild dissociation. At first I was burdened by almost constant phrenophobia - in no small part thanks to this recent influx of "studies" saying that weed causes or at least triggers schizophrenia and DPD. I have since been able to mostly overcome this fear, though I still have occasional anxiety and even panic attacks. The effects are obviously worse after smoking - I don't know if it relates to the potency of the weed I've been smoking or some other factor, but in any event I've taken a break (this is day 5 sans weed) and my condition seems to be improving.
I had a very intense trip once on lsd where it began to spiral downward and i became convinced that I was going insane (typical bad trip story, i know). I came out of that trip feeling very resolved and confident in my mental powers, but lately smoking the chron seems to invoke flashbacks of that "i'm losing it" feeling.
That's all that I can think of as far as signs and symptoms. I'm excited to hear what you guys think. Thanks in advance for the feedback.

I've always gotten anxiety and paranoia from weed. When I stopped smoking daily the difference was pretty astonishing; I realized just how paranoid I had become.

Marijuana and other drugs do not cause schizophrenia. They can only further latent mental problems.
Your best bet is to take a break from drugs and get your head clear, then try again. Or just smoke less.
If you are a naturally anxiety prone person, weed will generally make that worse. It's a drug that tends to amplify the current mood you are in.
I have the same problem though, good luck with it.

Smoke less? I usually smoke my dank out of my one hitter or a tiny bowl that I smoke over the course of a long period of time. Good weeds only better for you if you smoke less of it. Not sure what else to tell ya. Doing any drug all the time isn't good for you. Personally I don't mess with anything but the best weed anymore mainly because I have breathing issues but also because the crappy stuff burns me out.
Also, I've been smoking for 6 years now and took a year off in the middle and I felt the same as I did when I was smoking. Sometimes worse. I developed insomnia before I started smoking again too which hasn't ever gone fully away.

here in CA, the legal dispensaries sell weed that identifies wether the strain is indica, sativa, or a mix. most likely your smoking sativa, it always made me pretty paranoid, try switching to an indica strain, i dont remember any off the top of my head but pm me, im headed to a dispensary later today.

Yeah, that's all good advice. I think I'm starting to gear towards only smoking on occasion, on weekends, or a hit or two before bed every once in awhile instead of constantly every time i hang out with people. Avoiding friends who do nothing but get stoned has helped me take a break quite a bit.
It seems like this affects quite a few people who smoke habitually for a long period of time. I'm glad its not just me, haha.

It's definitely not just you. People have different reactions to different drugs. For example I can't socialize worth a shit on weed, but alchohol let's me act smooth. My other friend says weed helps him talk though! Some of my stoner friends don't drink because they don't like it, point being don't let yourself get convinced that it's only you just because you're the only one in the group with the effect.

Sounds like you're doing the right thing. I've been doing this myself lately. Its been easy for me because I've got so much stuff to do with music and school that not smoking weed lets me get everything done then I can unwind at the end of the day with a few puffs if I want to and have my fun on the weekends.

You might find that on the occasions when you do smoke that you get even more anxiety. At least smoking on a regular basis keeps your tolerance up, but taking a break usually amplifies all of the affects of being high, both positive and negative. If you're worried about it, just be cautious and don't smoke too much unless you're comfortable with it.
I've found that certain strains definitely give me a dissociated feeling the day after smoking if I have a little too much. I suggest you seek out a strain with anxiolytic properties. For that, I highly (hah, pun) endorse the strain Jack Herer. Actually I'd recommend it for anything . When it's around, I pick up as much as I possibly can. It's a hybrid but its sativa properties are dominant, so it leaves you clear-headed but also with a pleasant body high. If it's grown properly, it has a great smell and flavor to it, especially when vaporized. It's the best strain I've ever had as far as the level of euphoria and happiness it brings out. Hands down my favorite strain, and I think it's just what you need .

It's pretty cool that the Shroomery got mentioned in the book
But yeah, I've definitely felt anxiety from weed, always in the more stoned states.

I think weed brings out anxieties from your subconscious that you've repressed...
I might be talking out of my ass though.
But seriously, when I first started smoking, I would be anxious and wake up the next day anxious. Now, I embrace all my fears and anxiety, and wake up the next morning

update: I decided to take one big hit of some blackberry Indica on the way to work. I work as a valet and am a decent driver, and I've always considered my own car one of the safest places to smoke. After not smoking for 5 days I was pretty damn ripped off that single hit. Peak effects hit me after about 10 or 15 minutes; I noticed my heart rate picking up and my throat getting tense so I drank a beer to take the edge off. I still had pretty noticeable anxiety, but no thoughts of real mental instability. I felt quite uncomfortable on the way to work, and again when talking to the lady at the tea shop and to my coworkers, but after about an hour it mellowed out and I was able to enjoy the experience as normal. I think i'm gonna get back on the "break" bandwagon, start exercising a bit and regulating my diet better and then maybe try toking up again when my head's completely clear.
I also kind of wanna try a roll or two sometime soon to test its effect on my anxiety; my only experience with MDMA to date is with Molly (powder form, i dont know how common that name is).
But in any event i'm not sure about the indica vs. sativa effects on the anxious feelings; I don't live anywhere near a place with dispensaries though so I can never be 100% sure exactly what I'm smoking.
Thanks again for the help guys
