Pan substrates

I notice that most people use poo for pans. I'm looking to give them a try but I'll be cultivating in my room and I really don't want to deal with poo smell, neither would the people I live with.
Can I spawn them to something else? What are some recommendations?

Straw'll work. Field-aged, brought to field capacity, and pasteurized properly, manure doesn't have a smell. Pan substrates'll also need to be cased. Don't make your Pan substrates any thicker than 1 and a half to 2 inches.

I was going to spawn on rye grain and then mix it with a mixture of pasturized straw and coco-fiber. Then case with a thin layer of topsoil, sound good?

Rye as the grain spawn is good. Cut the coir. Pans'll need something they can decompose a little bit, hense the organic materials such as manure and straw.
Don't case with a regular top soil. Use Jiffy seed starter mix or, make a casing or using 50-50 peat moss and vermiculite brought to field capacity and pasteurized properly. Jiffy seed starter mix is ready to use as a casing right out of the bag. Just be sure it's the proper field capacity. Be sure to pasteurize it properly.

What exactly is "field capacity"?

Field Capacity is the proper hydration level of the bulk substrate for the mushroom culture.
When you'v hydrated your substrate to the point where a few drops to a small rivulet or stream of water escapes from the substrate materials when squeezed hard in your hand is field capacity.
