i did have a cob web on my cubes lately, it was less white and more fussy looking mostly on the surface of the cake, and i could easily remove it with a Q-tip, except that it spread too quickly so it went to garbage

Well if it ever happens again if you would shoot me a pic of it. I took advantage of the search engine but couldnt find any good pics of it.

From what I've read, the main difference is that cobweb mold doesn't have that ropey texture while mycelium does. I can clearly see the ropey-ness in your picture.

Well, the petri dish on the left is actually mushroom mycelium, the one on the right is the Dactylium (cobweb mold). Cobweb has the stringy, wispy grey appearance, as opposed to the nice bright white look of the healthy mushroom mycelium.

Another way to spot cobweb is to check how quickly it grows. It can cover a substrate or petri dish in 24-48 hours. Since it has that thin, sickly growth it can cover alot of ground in a short period of time.
I just tossed an agar dish that was 100% cobweb. The first day I saw it I was like but had a nagging feeling it looked wrong. The second day I was like . 3rd and 4th days it covered the entire plate and thickened up a little bit.

Cobweb can be tricky to identify sometimes, but if take a good sniff at what your growing it'll become obvious fast if you've got cobweb or not. Mycelium smells like well... mushrooms. Cobweb will have a sour smell that's a huge giveaway.
