You're going to have to ween yourself off it dude. Going cold turkey is probably going to be too hard for you if you are drinking heavily every day.

The other thing to try is drinking lemonade or some other fizzy drink everytime you want alcohol.

Also try going for a walk every night before you start drinking.

Slowly try to cut down on the amount you drink. Start by cutting out a couple of drinks per night then wait until you have adjusted to that then cut down another couple of drinks.

You answered your own question, specially if you have a family, which you do.
If it is serious drinking every night, let me suggest AA. At least go for 3 months. I have seen this work for people.

Another thing, you need to stay busy. That helps me not drink. If your busy all the way up for a certain "late" hour (late for you). You will rationalize not drinking. Trust me. You need hobbies. Or just get any job you can find. The gym is good. Go to the gym, get tired. It will help.

Some ideas for staying busy:

-gym(which you are)

-start the p90x program

-make blogs on what your interested in

-fresh water fish hobby, yes thats someones fish tank.

-Salt water

-Growing mushrooms (doesnt have to be the illegal type)

-Building an outdoor pond, or a pot pond

-play some computer or video games

-pick up a good book and READ it

-go hiking

-pick up some arts and crafts somewhere

-draw/paint

-learn a new trade

Let me add some books:

The Giver
1984
The firm
Animal Farm
How to kill a mockingbird
Lord of the rings (very long though, sometimes boring)
Harry potters

I forgot all the really good books, but this is a start.

Also, learn how to make a website. Make it on something you like.

Ive given you endless amounts of things to do. Keep busy, man up.

you said you've got a wife. Well she is going to be a big part of this!

Make a deal with your wife and she will help to keep you accountable.

I know that when my dad goes overboard with the drinking my mum takes over and pours all the alcohol down the sink and hides it away from him. If you ask your wife to help she will help. but you can't get angry at her when she intervenes.

If you understand that half the pain you go through when quitting drinking is a result of physical addiction then that will help. It's not just a weakness in the mind. Your body is craving the alcohol because it has become accustomed to recieving it.

You can control what your mind is thinking but your body is also SCREAMING for alcohol. That is going to be the hardest part to control. That's why if you can even cut back on one drink per night it is a massive victory.

I would also recommend sauna followed by swim. hit the sauna for about 20 mins then jump into a cool pool. you will feel amazing. It is the best natural high I have discovered so far. It's even better if you can go into an outside pool with lots of sunshine.

Great work dude! Great to hear you did this. If you are able to do this one night then you can do it again.

Keep it up

Has anyone here over come there drinking problem?  How did you avoid the temptations?  I could really use some advice as this is getting out of hand.

You sound JUST like me. I can drink as much as I want, my parents like to drink. I have liquor, beer, wine, whatever I want. In small or large amounts.

The hardest part is literally just giving it up. Every day I see both my parents drinking and I'm just eyeballing them and I get jealous they are buzzing and I'm not, laughing hard and enjoying themselves.

After a week of torture of not drinking (having lots of weed helps), it normally doesn't bother me too much after that. After a month, I don't even give it a thought. But if I start drinking again... the cycle continues.

I don't know what it is about alcohol, but after I got that one or two drinks in me, all hell breaks loose and I want to get drunk, but I try my best not to.

Just take it day by day and remind yourself you do not want to wake up tired, hungover, feeling louzy, that you don't want to brought down by alcohol and that you shouldn't poison yourself every night, maybe only on weekends? Dunno... try your best mate, thats all you can do. We're only human..

It may not sound like a big deal but its probably been over a year without getting quite drunk so its a major step
