Writing a paper for Philosophy class. Any book suggestions??
    #14102055 - 03/11/11 01:40 AM (12 years, 11 months ago)

Hey guys.

I'm taking a Philosophy class this semester called Special Topics. The topics discussed this semester are Human Nature, Personal Identity and Selfhood. We've covered many different philosophers from Aristotle to Hume to Locke and have spent hours with our desks in a circle having really TRIPPY discussions, trying to figure out who the hell we are and where our sense of self comes from, stuff like that.

We have to write a final paper about whatever we want so long as it deals with at least one of those three topics. So the topic I chose is "How psychedelic drugs can impact your sense of personal identity".

I'll probably be writing a lot from my own experiences, but we're also required to have at least 5 legitimate sources. Does anyone have any suggestions for books I should check out that can help me in writing this paper?

Thanks guys.

I'm not sure if there's enough about that topic to write a paper on, that question can be answered rather quickly: drugs can impact your sense of personal identity because they can cause you to become more introspective than usual, which can further cause you to become aware of things about yourself that you were previously unaware of, and/or look at things about yourself that you were aware of from a different perspective.

I'm not sure if you can turn that into a 2 or 3 page essay, but if you can, then more power to ya!

There's a pretty good book on the subject of personal identity by a cognitive scientist named Douglas Hofstadter, called "I Am a Strange Loop." It suggests that the sense of personal identity is the result of a complex feedback loop of symbols in our brains.

Daniel Dennett and David Chalmers have also written some interesting stuff on philosophy of mind.

there's a lot you could write on that

you could try to work in the idea of how drugs modulate and warp not only your thoughts but sensory reality, which can lead one to an understanding on the ultimately transitory and illusory nature of sense reality in the first place

Aldous Huxley's The Doors of Perception sounds like it'd be perfect as a source for your paper as it deals with Huxley taking mescaline and philosophically reflecting on its effects, including on his sense of self.

Also TiHKAL and PiHKAL by the Shulgins have descriptions of a panoply of psychedelic drugs and their effects on consciousness, I'd definitely recommend checking these out too.

Tell them you took mushrooms, walked outside, and "the neighbours were made of the fabric of your mind", "everything was one divine, infinite surface" and you "felt like you were finally the person you had always wanted to be and sober life seemed like some nightmare, for all of us."

I disagree. There's good and bad things about it. You take the good with the bad.

Thanks for all the help guys. I really appreciate it. Samurai Drifter, I went to the library earlier and found every book you suggested and checked them out  I'll go back again tomorrow and see if I can find the ones that everyone else suggested.

Thanks again.

I think Chi would be a great topic.

You could use it to determine the validity of subjective experience.

Castaneda's books certainly mix fact with fiction but they are still worth reading, its still very interesting if any of that shamanic knowledge is true, but honestly just a great read in general whether or not its true.

You can talk about the illusion of a self and study Wittgenstein's Philosophical Investigations. Then you can get into all his arguments on the mental life and how he attacks all the claims of traditional philosophers such as Locke and Hume. It is some really mindblowing stuff.
