I think they increase in speed due to the wave nature, a wave that overlaps another wave increases the first wave. Also the deeper the water the slower they move, so right before they hit the shore they start moving slower and get backed up water so they become taller.

Usually there are quite a few earthquakes after a big one as the plate readjusts itself into a more long term stable position... Perhaps they consider it a separate event and not an aftershock if it occurs elsewhere along the fault?

In total energy , it decreases the further the tsunami travels - It doesn't seem very predictable by how much though. Along the Japanese coast, some parts were hit with 10m of water, others with 4m, some with .5m - my guess is that hawaii won't be rocked too hard, and the US itself will hardly feel a thing.

So incredibly sad.
Even though earthquakes are so expected...it's still a fucking shook when they come and wash away so much land... Such a disaster...
Moth....I hope you are okay..

Like... when tension is released in one earthquake it slightly destabilizes other points of tension on the same plate in other areas? That's how Earth rolls yo

we just had an emergency broadcast, oregon/washington coast upgraded from a tsunami watch to a tsunami warning...

i live on maui, hawaii
warning sirens going off now, cops on loudspeakers telling us to leave our low-lying neighborhood and head to slightly higher ground.
we are tossing some food, blankets and pillows in the truck and heading to a park a little higher up the road. we don't live right on the coastline, but close enough that there is a risk.
we've been getting txts and callls from people on mainland and neighbor islands.
the last time this happened was after the chile earthquake it ended up being a non-event out here.
here's to hoping this one is the same.
peace out shroomery -- i will update you later today
