The only alternative is another large body of water, preferably a river. So no, it's not 'pretty stupid'.

Well lets look at the big picture. I dont really think its a good idea to build them
anywhere. They are expensive as fuck, you can lose a ton of power really fast if
any problem occurs. A lot of investors do not want to pitch in because of fears they
will not get their money back in return. And they are dangerous. As we all can see
natural disasters happen. And again as we all can see what can happen when a disaster
hits a region with a lot of nuclear reactors.

Anyways.....

haarp?
yes i thought of that also, who knows?
Who can prove that it is not so?
Dont forget there are many things we as people dont know.

I even thought of the 2012 conspiracy,
but i will not try to discus it over here since its a hard thought.
Its not up to me ,since i dont really know 4 sure.
But sometimes i am thinking of it.

One thing is 4 sure, how could they build an reactor on an land where earthquakes can happen?
Ok,this reactors could take 7.0 on the scale, but there was an almost 9.0 on scale.

Questions questions questions flow through my head how this could ever happen.

My heart goes out for all the victims, this could getting many worster then it allready is.

As is my own opinion and thoughts,
the govs dont tell us all what happens.
They say today there is steam and white smoke escaping from a reactor,
what does that mean?
Is it burning, melting, they say they dont know what it is?
Could it be an sign of an meltdown?

Please dont get me wrong,it is just a thought i have,
not meaning it is what really happens.
i hope this situation dont get worster is the only thing i can say 4 sure.

That's two different decisions:
1. do we build nuclear power plants?
2. if we do, where do we put them?
I was referring to decision #2. Question #1 is a legitimate one as well, and the drawbacks you mention are all debatable. Many gas or coal powered plants are as big as the average nuclear plant in terms of power output, and even more sensitive to natural disasters as they tend to have much lower design limits for physical stress. The fact that there are about 500 commercial reactors implies that someone was prepared to invest in them, which is supported by that fact that even today new nuclear power plants are planned and being built, and not only in China. Finally, this positively massive earthquake is the first one that has led to serious problems in Japan (or at any nuclear power plant, for that matter), and modern reactor designs are capable of dealing with even this excessive force of nature. So I guess there are a few nuances to the story (I haven't touched upon even a small fraction here) that make the discussion a lot more complicated than many people think.

Understandable. I guess I try to look to the future too much because the way
I see it we should be investing more time and effort/money into developing sustainable
energy. It blows my mind that we do not have free energy yet. Is there not some team
of absolute geniuses somewhere "just thinking shit up" lol. I think there is too
much money and jobs wrapped up in our current system for the powers that be to even
think about free energy for the people.

Because Japan decided it didn't want to be fully dependent on external resources for its energy requirements, as any modern nation would do.

Quote:

Ok,this reactors could take 7.0 on the scale, but there was an almost 9.0 on scale.

The plants were designed in the 1960s/70s for a 8.2M quake. 9.0 is roughly 8 times more powerful (note that the Richter scale is logarithmic, not linear). Considering the force of the quake and the ensuing tsunami, it is positively staggering how well these reactors were able to withstand this ordeal. And yes, I know how twisted this sounds, but you don't want to know how much worse things would have been if these reactors were not of a half-decent design and maintained by the most anal people in the world. Also note that if external power had been restored to the plant, we wouldn't have had the problem of stuff overheating all over the place. The damage to the plant itself was not the real problem. It was the external power that failed during a long time (it still hasn't been restored) which is the major problem.

Quote:

Steam, which is the result of water evaporating as it is heated up by the reactors. This has been going in since Saturday, the only worrying difference is that the containment of one of the reactors is damaged so that steam now escapes permanently instead of periodically through deliberate venting. A partial meltdown is still a likely possibility, but the environmental and epidemiological consequences are nearly impossible to predict.

I found this graphic helpful in terms of amounts times.

I wish there was something more I could do to help then to donate 10 bucks.
I hope that what we learn from this will improve world energy policy.
Im not saying do away with nuclear power but maybe by banding tougher we can make nuclear power safe for all?

  • That is pretty amazing. No. 3 is completely devastated.

Also, Japan is about the size of California, so this radiation can and will hit highly, highly populated areas when the winds shift. I saw on the news that they are sending in more crew now and are considering dropping seawater from helicopter.
