i dont think scientists are the ones making that claim. people have been talking about the "super moon" thing for awhile and that it will increase the likeliness of natural disasters happening next week (earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes).

although, atleast in the article that I read, the scientists they talked to say there's no real correlation between how close the moon is to the earth and natural disasters.

There has been a lot of talk about an american disaster. Not sure why because its
not like the media to do something like that. They even plan to cut funding on
ocean disaster warnings and protection in the PNW.

the moon causing earthquakes doesn't seem so far-fetched to me:shrug:

this guy was right at least once

Jim Berkland
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jim Berkland is a retired geologist who worked many years for the U.S. Geological Survey. He was also the first County Geologist for Santa Clara County (in northern California) and was in that position for twenty-one years. He has published over fifty scientific papers. He has been a popular guest on many network news programs and talk shows on the subject of earthquake prediction. Berkland claims he has developed a method for predicting earthquakes, and on his web site and in a monthly newsletter, he lays out a detailed set of signs and precursors that he uses for his predictions. He also lists dozens of major earthquakes he claims to have predicted.

Berkland was suspended for two months from his Santa Clara County geology position in late October, 1989 after an article appeared in the Gilroy Dispatch (Gilroy, California) serendipitously entitled "Is 'World Series' Quake Coming?" on October 13, one day before the start of Baseball's 1989 World Series. In an interview with the reporter, he made a prediction that a major earthquake would occur in the San Francisco Bay Area in the near future. The Loma Prieta earthquake occurred on October 17, just before the start of the first game of the Series. Berkland claims that government officials told him not to make any more predictions, fearing mass panic.

Critics counter that the majority of other predictions he has made are much less specific than his 1989 prediction, and that he has since been unable to make a public prediction of that significance before an event.

Other scientists have reviewed and debunked several statistical correlations advocated by Berkland and others in predicting earthquakes, including lost pets and syzygy of the moon.

Fans of Berkland find logic in his method and maintain that he has an 80% accuracy rate. He claims to use tidal flooding tables based upon lunar perigee (when the moon is closest to earth, which affects gravitational pull) and the twice-monthly alignment of the sun and moon. He also considers strange animal behavior, such as the number of ads in newspapers for lost or runaway pets, as well as the mass beaching of whales and dolphins. He attributes the strange behaviors to radical changes in the Earth's magnetic field just prior to earthquakes and in the general area of the quakes. He says that, when these changes occur, they interfere with the sea mammals', and even the migratory birds', ability to navigate, which explains the mass beachings. He says even dogs and cats can sense the disruptions, which explains elevated rates of runaway-pet reports. Research on Earth's magnetic field, and how it is affected by moving tectonic plates and earthquakes, is ongoing.

This may sound stupid, but would texas get any damage by an earthquake?

yea.. in that same article

Quote:

Peter Goldreich, an emeritus professor for the Astronomy and Planetary Science Department at Caltech University, notes that he and several other scientists have studied the moon for decades and have never found it to cause these natural disasters.
“There have been a lot of studies on whether earthquakes on our planet were triggered when the moon was closest to Earth, and no conclusive evidence has ever been found for that,” Goldreich told FoxNews.com. “The idea is that the strain builds up in the Earth until only a small little bit of extra gravitational force could tip it over and cause an earthquake, and this could come from the moon. But there’s been no absolutely no correlation for that.”

no mention of US military preparing for a west coast earthquake/tsunami anywhere in that article..
