Visiting a Friend in Prison

An old buddy of mine was recently sentenced to seven years in prison. I was reading the Bible the other day and came across Matthew 25, wherein Jesus repeats himself four times:
Quote:
Jesus Christ said: 35 For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, 36 naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.' (Matthew 25:35-36) (bolface mine) http://www.usccb.org/nab/bible/matthew/matthew25.htm
He left a wife and three young children; he must be absolutely miserable. So, I was kicking around the idea of going to visit him.
I am fortunate enough to be forty years old and have never seen the inside of a jail cell, so I'm not really sure if this is a good idea. How do I find out where he is? How do I go about visiting? What should I bring? What do I say? Is it a good idea to go visit at all?

I believe you should do whatever is necessary to find where he is and how to get to him.
Just try to imagine the sorrow and solitude... Imagine now the possibility of temporarily alleviating a portion of that easily.
Keep the love flowing.

Bring cigs if he doesn't lol ...currency and the legal commodity heh.
Also, as far as the visiting goes. He can have unlimited blood relatives visit him but if its like others (AZ is the only one I personally know..meh..) he could probably only have 1 unrelated visitor on his list. As far as setting it up, i'm not sure...check the county's or whatever jurisdiction's correctional facility's site for info. Last time I visited anyone was when I was a child and had no choice.

I got a old friend who just got put away for 60 years for intoxication manslaughter (he was drunk and killed a girl in a wreck with 2 prior DUI's).
I'm in the process of trying to schedule a visit.
I'll let you know anything I find out on the process, OP.

When I went to visit an old friend in prison I'm pretty sure we had to set something up in advance. Can't give you many details because my mom took care of it, but he was allowed phone calls so I'm guessing he would just talk to my mom or whoever and if they wanted to visit then he would set it up for the weekend. I think he was also only allowed like 2 visits a month, but I could be wrong about that.
My advice would be to try and talk your friend's wife or a family member. Next time they talk she can pass on your number and then he can call you from prison.
That's just based on my experience though. I'm sure different prisons have different policies.

My cousin tried getting away from his whiney gf and unfortuntely was drinking. She was hanging in the window of the vehicle from the outside and he drove away (in a suburban hood so it wasn't very fast). somehow he ran over her leg and didn't know it. they were both drinking by the way. so she went to hospital for injuries and he got arrested eventually for something and got 5 yrs.

you can find an inmate in a federal prison here - http://www.bop.gov/iloc2/LocateInmate.jsp
and i am assuming federal, although you made no indication. 7 years is a long time...
one of my close family members is in prison, and I have gone to visit him. anyone suggesting to bring smokes for him has obviously never visited a federal prison. smoking is prohibited, and you wouldn't be allowed to give the inmate anything at all anyway. you are only permitted to give them a hug or handshake upon their entry and exit. you can't even bring in a cell phone to show off pictures.
you sit facing them and are under strong supervision. if they get up to take a piss, a guard follows them in and watches the process.
you won't be able to give him anything except food and drinks from the vending machines that are in the meeting room. these are hot commodities, and all the good shit will sell early. so if you want to brighten an inmates day, bring a stack of singles and a stack of quarters. get there early and buy the best food.
your friend will be happy to see a familiar face. don't worry about what to say. you will no doubt make him smile just by being there.
also, i only had to walk in and fill out some paperwork to visit. i didn't have to schedule anything. i'm sure this will vary from prison to prison.

. Most places won't allow cigarettes from outside the system (contraband). Some prisons don't even allow inmates (or guards) to smoke. He'll need money or money order, (depends on their rules) for the commissary. The only thing more uplifting than a visitor on visitation day was mail call. Unexpected letters really help when you are ... Be advised, all incoming mail will be opened , read and checked for contraband... Talk to the wife, find out the drill, and by all means, Visit him. Make sure you're clean cut-ish, sober, and be prepared for and emotional reunion . . . . . .

I'd like to state that the cigarette thing I mentioned (can't talk for others) was only due to me having to visit my father in jail as he's been in there basically since I started school. All I can remember, and granted it was the early 90's, there were some prisons he was at where we could sit in a large room with lots of tables and vending machines and windows or walk outside in the grassy area surrounding visiting building. Others he's been at I've only been able to talk to him through a glass window and phone.
Point is....long time ago...lack of a clear memory of it all (besides him ripping off the filters of some malb reds). Doubt any of the prisons my dad was at were federal so...maybe thats why cigs were allowed in? Rules could've changed.

Lol I think *everyone* has seen that movie; it's a classic piece of cinema and is shown on TV regularly to this day.
