I just had a beautiful moment, I don't know how else to describe it

While taking a shower I was thinking back to 7th and 8th grade when I was in band. I was reminiscing about all the good times I had, I remembered how good I was and how dedicated I was with my instrument, then I started tearing up, I don't think this has ever happened to me. I've haven't really been happy for a while but this tiny moment got me feeling extremely positive and happy. This feeling is indescribable...
Now im considering learning a new instrument
-------------------- December 1960: "They took the drug one evening at Leary's house and had a profound experience, during which Ginsburg prophetically realized that it was a time to start "a peace and love movement". He then ran naked around the house, attempted to get Kruschev and Kennedy on the telephone and announced to the operator that he was God."

I love little moments like these that come out of nowhere and are powerful. I too just had one. Went outside for a dip in the hot tub, and the light from the house illuminated a big tree in the back yard. I was just amazed at the beauty of it all, just so amazing. I sat there immersed in it all, just looking for about 5 minutes before it faded. Felt like I was mildly tripping. I have been meditating 3 - 4 hours a day though, so I think that plays a large part.

I've recall a similar experience but it was probably not as profound as yours. Can you teach me a little about meditation? I've always been interested but never really took time to learn about it
now that you mentioned tripping. Call me crazy but I compare this feeling to molly in a way.

I got into meditation by doing mindfulness meditation. Which I take as being aware. Simply being aware of what is, and knowing that you are aware. So for example just being aware that you are breathing, being aware that you seeing, feeling your body as it moves.
For most of my life my mind seemed to think on its own, just talking and talking, the damn thing never shut up! It would spin stories, and create fantasies and just go on and on never being quite for a single second. So I guess my main reason for starting to meditate was to "quite the mind" to shut that son of a bitch up for two seconds so I could get some peace and quiet
I think your motivation for wanting to meditate is #1 important, and #2 might shift you into which meditation would work best to achieve that. And if you don't know, that's fine, just seeking to meditate is cool in of itself.
For a good beginning meditation pick a place, it should be secluded as possible (a room, or just a place you can be undisturbed for a period of time) quite is desirable but not necessary. Next set a time you want to sit for, 10 minutes or more is a good starting time. I find it is very helpful to set an intention for your meditation, as in saying out loud or silently to yourself "I am going to sit in silence and be aware of this moment for 10 minutes", mean it when you say it, intend to do what you say.
So sit down in a chair, or on a cushion, close your eyes and simply become aware. Feel yourself breathing in, feel yourself breathing out. Feel yourself sitting down, be aware of hearing, be aware of thinking. Every time your mind drifts off into the past, or some fantasy or conversation simply bring it back to being aware. Here it can be important to have an anchor or tether to bring the mind back to. The most common and my favorite is the breath. Simply be aware of breathing, either at the tip of the nostrils or in the abdomen, or wherever, just be aware of breathing at is occurs. And each time you drift calmly bring the attention back to the breath, over and over again.
Sorry if I overwhelmed you at all. It can sound more complicated then it is. Short version: Sit down, be quite, and be aware. You can also find a short guided meditation online for free, they are easier to follow and easier to stay focused.
I first meditated about a year ago, and just got serious 4 months and started doing it daily. I can say with conviction it is the best thing I have ever done for myself, I feel it is my path to what I seek and desire, and I have grown to love it. I don't feel on "auto-pilot" anymore, I am aware of thing as they arise and don't have to give in temptations or react automatically as much.
Good luck, if you have any questions feel free to ask

What's the best way to know when you've meditated for a sufficient time interval? Seems like an alarm clock would make you jump out of your seat by being too strident or something... what do you guys generally use to know when your time's up?

At first I used my phones alarm on a low setting, but recently switched to a bell timer on my ipod. Bell to start the meditation, then two bells to end it. Much softer and a better way to ease out of the meditation.
Can get them for free: http://www.insightmeditationcenter.org/meditation-timers/
That website also has lots of really good guided meditations and well as dharma talks.
